Kitchen Extract Cleaning across Greater London

Kitchen extract cleaning in Greater London: how it works

Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract systems since 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 and are fully insured. Common call-outs are for a kitchen taken over without any extract records and an inspection that picked up a dirty extract, across canopies and hoods, discharge points and extract fans.

Night work is normal for us. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. The visit itself takes a single shift for most kitchens, with long duct runs and tall risers needing more time.

  1. Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the system and how it’s reached.
  2. Grease readings set the baseline, and a fixed quote follows.
  3. After the kitchen closes, we sheet the area and set up to contain grease and water.
  4. Heavy deposits are scraped by hand and the system degreased to TR19® Grease.
  5. The sign-off: post-clean readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next clean date.

What you will pay

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you are not sure what’s needed, call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email for straight advice and a fixed quote.

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Around London

Locally, jobs take us to businesses close to St Mary-at-Hill, St George the Martyr and The BFI Reuben Library. Nearby too are Trinity Arms Public House (within half a mile south-east), Ark Globe Academy (under half a mile south), Charles Dickens Primary School (less than half a mile north-west) and Newington Gardens (under half a mile south). London has its own railway station: Elephant & Castle station. A little further out are Surrey Dispensary (within half a mile south-east) and Baynard's Castle (0.9 miles north). For a walk, there’s Bellenden Road Nature Garden and St. James's Park Lake.

  • Local schools include London School of Musical Theatre (under half a mile west)

Kitchen extract cleaning across Greater London: local notes

Kitchens across Greater London cook for very different hours, from all-day town-centre sites to part-time hall and school kitchens. Grease readings and BESA’s minimum intervals set the schedule for each.

London and the South East cover everything from city basements to rural kitchens. The same TR19® standard applies to all of them, in Greater London and beyond.

London: Where a hall near St George the Martyr, or anywhere in London, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Surrey Dispensary (about within half a mile south-east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

When it’s something else

To be straight with you, there are a few things this work won’t fix:

  • Damaged duct sections that need replacing
  • A broken extract fan that will not run
  • A damper that sticks or has a damaged link

Part by part

Canopy and plenum

Canopies vary from a single hood to long runs over several appliances, each section is cleaned and photographed before and after.

Grease filters

Gaps around filters let fat through to the duct. Each filter is checked as it goes back in, and flag any that do not.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit ends with a dated report and photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

Keeping the system healthy

Simple habits between visits make a real difference. Our advice:

  • Run the extract fan throughout cooking
  • Empty any grease troughs or cups on the canopy
  • Clean the grease filters regularly between TR19 cleans
  • Keep the TR19 certificate and photo report in the maintenance log

The report gives a recommended date for the next clean, based on your cooking hours and the grease we measured. A 3, 6 or 12-monthly maintenance plan keeps it on track, so the date isn’t missed.

Run the extract whenever the kitchen is cooking. Switching it off early leaves vapour to settle on the canopy and plenum, and the next clean has more to do.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.

Questions from Greater London

How much does kitchen extract cleaning cost in Greater London?

The cost depends on the size of the system, its condition, access and timing. Ask us for a fixed quote, typically ready within one working day.

How far ahead should we book?

Earlier is better, especially for out-of-hours work. We normally quote within one working day, and emergencies are covered by our 24/7 line.

How do you protect the area?

Floors and surfaces near the work are sheeted before we start, and anything we remove is contained. At the end, the area is cleaned down.

When do you clean the extract?

We clean while the kitchen is closed, working evenings, overnight or at weekends to suit you. Equipment needs to be off and cool before work begins.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes, always. We diagnose before we treat: the survey shows what needs doing and what access we need and the fixed quote is built on it.

What types of premises do you cover?

All kinds of commercial and public premises: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. Work is timed around how each site runs.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. We work across South East England and London, so we can schedule a run of sites on one programme. Each site gets its own report and photos.
