About kitchen extract cleaning in E17
A kitchen extract system is far more than the canopy you can see. Beyond the filters run the plenum, the ducts and risers, the fan and the point where air leaves the building, and each part collects grease. Our clean follows the air from canopy to discharge, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We are often asked to deal with a new tenancy or takeover with no cleaning history and a TR19 certificate needed for the insurer, across plenums and filters, discharge points and horizontal duct runs.
We start by comparing what we find with the survey or your pictures. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. After that, the work takes anything from a few hours to a full night, depending on the size of the system.
- First comes a survey of the whole system, by pictures or a visit.
- Grease readings are taken at set points and you get a fixed quote.
- On the day, cooking equipment is switched off and left to cool, and everything nearby is sheeted.
- The whole route is cleaned, from the canopy through the ductwork to the fan and the discharge.
- Readings and pictures are taken again, and you receive a TR19 certificate and photo report.

Kitchen extract cleaning around E17
From Walthamstow, Leyton and Bakers Arms to its smaller places, E17 has kitchens of every size. Each extract is cleaned to the same TR19® standard, canopy to discharge.
In England, the Fire Safety Order puts the duty on the responsible person to assess and reduce fire risk, and each certificate and photo report is a record you can keep in your log book.
Walthamstow: Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Michael and All Angels, or anywhere in Walthamstow, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Wanstead Hospital is the nearest hospital to Walthamstow, about 2.2 miles east.
What your team can do, and what needs us
Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
What we are called out for in E17
Cooking fat leaves the pan as a fine vapour. As the air cools on its way through the duct, the fat condenses and sticks, and the layer grows a little with every meal cooked. Filters catch some of it, but never all.
What we are most often called out for:
- Proof of cleaning requested by an insurer
- A system with no record of a TR19 clean
- A kitchen taken over without any extract records
- A smoky, hot kitchen with weak extraction
What kitchen extract cleaning can’t fix
Not every problem is solved by kitchen extract cleaning, and we will tell you before work begins. It won’t put right:
- A broken extract fan that won’t run
- Ductwork that’s corroded, split or leaking (that is for a ductwork contractor)
- An undersized canopy or fan
Part by part
Ductwork and risers
Horizontal runs collect grease as the air slows and cools. We open access panels along the route and clean each section, recording any that cannot be reached.
Canopy and plenum
Grease meets the system first at the canopy and the plenum behind the filters. We clean both inside and out, including the filter housing.
Keeping the system healthy
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:
- Keep the cleaning records where you can find them
- Clean the grease filters regularly between TR19 cleans
- Wipe the canopy down at the end of each day
- Empty any grease troughs or cups on the canopy
The kitchen is left clean and ready for the next service. Grease and dirty water are collected and taken off site, and equipment can be switched back on once we have gone.
Book the next clean before the last one runs out. BESA guidance links the minimum interval to daily cooking hours, so a change in hours may mean a change in interval, and grease readings will show it.
Common questions in E17
What accreditations do you hold?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.
What happens if you cannot reach some of it?
They’re marked on the report. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, which we can install.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
TR19 isn’t written into law, but the Fire Safety Order 2005 does require the responsible person to manage fire risk. TR19 is the standard insurers and fire officers expect, and many policies require it.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we will propose a schedule with a fixed quote.
What does kitchen extract cleaning cost?
Size, condition, access and working hours all affect the cost. Ask us for a fixed quote, typically ready within one working day.
Will I get a certificate after the clean?
You receive a TR19 certificate and a photo report. Certificates are issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal, and the report includes before and after photos, grease readings and the recommended next clean date.
Will the clean disrupt our service?
When the kitchen is closed, at whatever time suits you. We need the equipment cool, and we leave the kitchen ready to cook.
