Kitchen extract cleaning in E10: how it works
A kitchen extract system is far more than the canopy you can see. Behind it sit the plenum and grease filters, then the ductwork, risers, extract fan and discharge, and grease settles in every one of them. A TR19® Grease clean deals with the whole route, not only the parts on show. The work covers vertical risers, plenums and filters and extract fans, and people most often call us about an overdue clean flagged by an EHO or fire officer and a smoky, hot kitchen with weak extraction.
The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes as long as the system needs, from a few hours to several planned visits.
- Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the system and how it’s reached.
- Grease readings set the baseline, and a fixed quote follows.
- We arrive after close, protect the area and contain the waste.
- The treatment: heavy grease scraped out, then every part degreased to TR19® Grease.
- The sign-off: post-clean readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next clean date.

Kitchen extract cleaning across E10: local notes
In E10, a busy kitchen in a place such as Walthamstow, Leyton and Bakers Arms and a quiet village kitchen need very different cleaning intervals. Grease readings and BESA’s minimum intervals set the schedule for each.
We work across London and the South East, and E10 is part of that area. Each job starts with a survey and a fixed quote, wherever it is in E10.
Leyton: Church and community hall kitchens, near Christian Hope Ministries International or anywhere around Leyton, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. A hospital like Queen Mary's Hospital for the East End, about 1.7 miles south, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.
Managing agents and facilities teams in E10
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.
Why it fails
Grease in an extract starts as vapour. Once it cools inside the ductwork, it condenses onto every surface it touches, and the layer grows a little with every meal cooked. The grease filters stop some, never all of it.
It’s time to book a visit if you see:
- Heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs
- Cleaning needed before an insurance renewal or survey
- Extraction mentioned at an environmental health visit
- Grease drips onto cooking equipment
Why act early?
Grease that is left only gets thicker. BESA guidance says the mean should not go above 200 microns between cleans, and 500 microns or more at any point needs immediate spot cleaning. The longer it’s left, the bigger the job becomes.
Comparing quotes
- What records you will receive afterwards
- Whether the figure could change on the day
- What hours they’ll be on site
- Whether they’re fully insured
What affects the cost of kitchen extract cleaning
Sites vary more than people expect. What affects the quote:
- One-off work versus a regular cycle
- The size of the system
- Any permits to work or inductions
- Parking and loading at the site
Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.
What we need to know
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:
- The site address and the type of premises
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
- A few general shots of the system
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
Between visits
Results last longer with the right care. We suggest:
- Keep grease collection points emptied
- Wipe the canopy down at the end of each day
- Diarise the next clean as soon as you get the certificate
- File each certificate with the fire risk assessment
Any section without access is marked on the report. A TR19 report should record what wasn’t cleaned as well as what was, and new access panels can be fitted so the next clean covers it.
Book the next clean before the last one runs out. BESA guidance links the minimum interval to daily cooking hours, so a change in hours may mean a change in interval, and grease readings will show it.
Common questions in E10
Do you clean the whole extract system or just the canopy?
A TR19 Grease clean covers the full extract route, not just the canopy. That means canopy, plenum, filters, ducts, risers, fan and discharge, reached through access panels where necessary.
What’s the right cleaning interval for a kitchen extract?
BESA guidance sets minimums by daily cooking hours: every 3 months for 12 to 16 hours, 6 months for 6 to 12 hours and 12 months for 2 to 6 hours. Grease readings can show a shorter interval is needed.
Are you a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member?
We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 sit alongside that, and we are fully insured.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line, for problems that cannot wait. Ring any time and tell us what’s happened.
Can one contract cover all our sites?
Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and you’ll get one fixed quote.
Can you quote from photos?
In many cases, yes. With good pictures, the site type and your last report, we can price many jobs. Larger or hidden systems need a survey on site first.
How far ahead should we book?
For planned work, earlier is better, especially if the next clean or test is due soon. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.
