Kitchen extract cleaning in CR2

Our kitchen extract cleaning service in CR2

Across CR2, we clean kitchen extract systems to BESA TR19® Grease. The job starts with a survey and grease readings, then works through canopy, plenum, filters, ductwork, fan and discharge. You get a TR19 certificate and a photo report at the end. Typical jobs include years of baked-on grease in the ducts and stale cooking odours from the system, across canopies and hoods, plenums and filters and extract fans.

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. On site, it takes a few hours for a small kitchen, longer for a large system.

  1. We start with a survey, so we know every part of the system before we quote.
  2. Set points are tested for grease thickness and the quote is fixed before any work starts.
  3. With the kitchen closed and equipment off and cool, the area is sheeted.
  4. The whole route is cleaned, from the canopy through the ductwork to the fan and the discharge.
  5. Finally the system is re-tested and photographed, and the certificate and report follow.

Landmarks near South Croydon

Locally, jobs take us to businesses close to Rutherford School, Purley Oaks Primary School and Duppas Hill, among other places. Also close by are Harris Academy Purley (0.6 miles west), Church of St Augustine (less than half a mile west) and The Purley Arms (within half a mile south-west). South Croydon has its own railway station: Sanderstead station. A little further out are Purley War Memorial Hospital (1.2 miles south-west) and Croydon Airport Visitor Centre (1 mile west). For a walk, there’s Roundshaw Downs and Duppas Hill.

Kitchen extracts across CR2

In CR2, a busy kitchen in a place such as Croydon, Purley and Waddon and a quiet village kitchen need very different cleaning intervals. The right interval comes from hours of use and grease readings.

Across England, including CR2, the responsible person has a legal duty to assess and reduce fire risk, and a TR19® certificate and photo report give you a record of the work.

South Croydon: Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Augustine or anywhere around South Croydon, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. A hospital like Purley War Memorial Hospital, about 1.2 miles south-west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

Why it fails

Grease filters are the first line of defence, and they’re often the weak point. Filters that are bent, badly fitted, missing or left uncleaned let more fat into the plenum and duct, and from there it travels on to the fan.

Common reasons sites call us are:

  • Heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs
  • A new tenancy or takeover with no cleaning history
  • An inspection that picked up a dirty extract
  • Proof of cleaning requested by an insurer

Why act early?

Every week without a clean adds another layer. Under BESA guidance, grease shouldn’t exceed a mean of 200 microns between cleans, and anywhere reaching 500 microns or more needs a spot clean straight away. Heavy build-up takes longer to remove than regular cleans.

Part by part

Grease filters

We clean the grease filters as part of the job, and put back so they seat correctly. We’ll tell you if any need replacing.

Restaurant and pub kitchens

Restaurants and pubs tend to cook long hours with plenty of frying and grilling, which can put them in BESA’s 3 or 6-monthly bands. We clean after close or before opening.

Between visits

So the system stays in good health:

  • Refit filters properly after cleaning
  • Wipe the canopy down at the end of each day
  • Keep the TR19 certificate and photo report in the maintenance log
  • Report grease drips, smells or fan noise right away

The certificate records when the clean was done, where and by whom. File it with the fire risk assessment and the maintenance log, so it’s to hand when an insurer, fire officer or EHO asks.

Clean the grease filters often, not just on clean day. A filter that is clean and seated properly stops more grease getting into the plenum, which slows build-up further down the system.

When it’s something else

Kitchen extract cleaning can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It doesn’t solve:

  • A fan motor or bearings that have failed (that needs a fan repair or replacement)
  • A canopy that’s too small or a system that was badly designed
  • Blocked drains from a neglected grease trap (a separate service)

Common questions in CR2

How much notice do you need?

For planned work, earlier is better, especially if the next clean or test is due soon. Emergencies are different, because our line is open 24/7.

What happens if you cannot reach some of it?

We record them on the report, with pictures where possible, and we tell you what would make it reachable, such as extra access panels in ductwork.

What do you do with what you remove?

It’s contained and taken away. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go rather than letting it spread.

What should I send you?

Only a few details: the address, the site type, your opening hours and how we reach the system. Photos and the last report help too. After that, simply ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.

Do you clean the whole extract system or just the canopy?

Everything from canopy to discharge: the canopy, the plenum behind the filters, the filters, horizontal ducts, vertical risers, the fan and the discharge, plus attenuators where fitted. Any part without access is noted.

What do you do to protect the area?

Floors and surfaces near the work are sheeted before we start, and waste is contained as we go. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. We always survey first, either from photos and details you send or on a site visit. A fixed quote follows.
