Kitchen extract cleaning in BR1: how it works
Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract systems since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 and are fully insured. The work covers horizontal duct runs, canopies and hoods and extract fans, and common reasons people get in touch are fat running down the canopy edge and extraction mentioned at an environmental health visit.
The visit has three parts: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, while signing off means the written report and pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, and that takes anything from a few hours to a full night, depending on the size of the system.
- We start with a survey, so we know every part of the system before we quote.
- Grease readings are taken at set points and you get a fixed quote.
- Once the kitchen has closed and the equipment has cooled, we sheet and protect the area.
- Canopy, plenum, filters, duct runs, risers, fan and discharge are all cleaned to TR19® Grease.
- Finally the system is re-tested and photographed, and the certificate and report follow.
What you’ll pay
We don’t list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll talk you through it.

Get a fixed quote
The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and we can price many jobs without a visit.
Landmarks near Plaistow
Typical jobs here are in premises near Downham Fields, Haberdashers' Aske's Knights Academy and Holy Trinity College Bromley and the streets around them. You will also find Burnt Ash Primary School (less than half a mile north-east), St Mary’s Church (under half a mile south-east) and The Railway Tavern (0.8 miles south). The nearest railway station is Sundridge Park station, about 0.6 miles south-east of the centre. Kitchen extract cleaning around BR1
Our kitchen extract cleaning work across BR1 takes in places such as Bromley, Chislehurst and Catford and the villages in between. We cover every place we list for BR1, 15 in all, and kitchens are cleaned around their opening hours, overnight and at weekends included.
In England, the Fire Safety Order puts the duty on the responsible person to assess and reduce fire risk, and a TR19® certificate and photo report give you a record of the work.
Plaistow: Where a hall near St Mary’s Church, or anywhere in Plaistow, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Plaistow is Bromley Hospital, about 1.5 miles south.
Aftercare tips
So the system stays in good health:
- Wash or exchange the filters often
- Report grease drips, smells or fan noise right away
- Give the canopy a daily wipe
- Refit filters properly after cleaning
The kitchen is left clean and ready for the next service. Grease and dirty water are collected and taken off site, and equipment can be switched back on once we’ve gone.
Keep the fan on throughout service. Cooking with the extract off lets grease and heat settle in the canopy, and the next clean has more to do.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. That is our job.
What affects the cost of kitchen extract cleaning
There’s no set price list, because no two systems are the same. What we look at:
- How many systems or sites are involved
- Parking and loading at the site
- Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
What you pay depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before work begins, so there are no surprises.
Helping us quote
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:
- The site address and the type of premises
- Problems your staff have spotted
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
Want a quote for kitchen extract cleaning? Please call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and tell us about the site. We will explain what we’d do and send a fixed quote before anything is booked.
Honest limits
Not every problem is solved by kitchen extract cleaning, and we will tell you before work begins. It does not solve:
- Blocked drains from a neglected grease trap (a separate service)
- Damaged duct sections that need replacing
- A broken extract fan that won’t run
What happens if it’s left?
Leaving the clean until the next refit does not make the grease go away. Fat that was soft and easy to remove hardens with heat and time, and that takes more work to shift. Staying on a regular cycle keeps each clean manageable.

BR1: your questions answered
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for anything that cannot wait until a planned visit. Ring any time and tell us what’s happened.
Do you look at the system first?
Yes. For many sites, pictures and a few details are enough, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.
What types of premises do you cover?
Any commercial site with kitchens or ventilation, from a single café to a large school. We work with hotels, schools, care homes, offices, retail and leisure sites.
What do you do with what you remove?
Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, including grease, debris and dirty water. We do not leave it behind.
Do you work with multi-site operators?
Yes. Send the list of sites and the work at each and you will get one fixed quote.
Which parts of the extract do you clean?
The whole system: the canopy, the plenum behind the filters, the filters, horizontal ducts, vertical risers, the fan and the discharge, plus attenuators where fitted. Any part without access is noted.
What about areas you can’t get to?
They’re marked on the report. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, and we can fit those.
