Kitchen extract cleaning across Belvedere

Kitchen extract cleaning in Belvedere

A kitchen extract system is far more than the canopy you can see. Beyond the filters run the plenum, the ducts and risers, the fan and the point where air leaves the building, and grease settles in every one of them. A TR19® Grease clean deals with the whole route, not only the parts on show. We are often asked to deal with extraction mentioned at an environmental health visit and years of baked-on grease in the ducts, across vertical risers, plenums and filters and horizontal duct runs. Kitchen extract cleaning, TR19 cleaning, extraction cleaning: whatever you call it, it’s the job we do every week across Greater London.

The fire risk in a kitchen extract sits in the parts nobody sees: the plenum, the duct and the fan, so that is where most of the work in Belvedere goes.

Kitchens in Belvedere, like many across London, can share a building with flats or offices, with the duct running up through shared risers. A duct fire there can reach parts of the building far from the range, so a regular TR19® clean protects everyone in it.

Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. So every job comes with a written report and photos, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

Part by part

Canopy and plenum

Grease meets the system first at the canopy and the plenum behind the filters. We clean both inside and out, including the filter housing.

Extract fan and discharge

Grease that reaches the fan coats the blades and the housing. We isolate it, open it up and degrease it.

What kitchen extract cleaning can’t fix

We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so these are the things it won’t cover:

  • A fan motor that has burnt out
  • Extraction that cannot cope with the cooking because of its design
  • A grease trap that needs emptying

Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will tell you honestly before you book.

What the work covers

  • Extract fans
  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Canopies and hoods
  • Plenums and filters
  • Discharge points
  • Vertical risers

Managing agents and facilities teams in Belvedere

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We work across London and the South East, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

Signs you need kitchen extract cleaning in Belvedere

In Belvedere, as anywhere, grease gathers where the air slows down: in long flat runs, at bends and changes of direction, and in the fan housing. Cooler sections of duct collect the most.

Most sites get in touch when they notice one of these:

  • A TR19 certificate needed for the insurer
  • An overdue clean flagged by an EHO or fire officer
  • Grease smells coming from the extract
  • Fat running down the canopy edge

Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Erith and District Hospital (about 0.8 miles south-east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

Belvedere questions

Which environmental health team covers Belvedere?

That is Bexley council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Belvedere. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.

Do you clean school canteen extracts around Belvedere out of term?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. There are about 26 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Belvedere. Tell us your holiday dates and we’ll book the visit for when the site is empty.

Why do insurers care about extract cleaning?

Because a dirty extract can spread a fire through a building. Many insurers require TR19 cleaning, and may refuse or reduce a claim without proof, so keep every certificate.

How long does a kitchen extract clean take?

That depends on the size of the system, the amount of grease and the number of access points. Most jobs take a single shift for most kitchens, with long duct runs and tall risers needing more time.

Are you accredited for kitchen extract cleaning?

Our work is to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, with certificates issued through the BESCA portal. We have been trading since 2009.

Do you work in Belvedere?

Yes. Our technicians work in Belvedere, within the South East and London area we cover.

What does TR19 mean?

It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked and expects a risk-based approach.

What’s the right cleaning interval for a kitchen extract?

BESA guidance sets minimums by daily cooking hours: every 3 months for 12 to 16 hours, 6 months for 6 to 12 hours and 12 months for 2 to 6 hours. Measured grease levels set the real interval.

What kitchen extract cleaning looks like in Belvedere

There are about 54 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 64 takeaways within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Belvedere, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Each one that cooks under a canopy has an extract system that collects grease and needs regular cleaning. Overnight is the normal time to clean a London kitchen extract, so trading isn’t affected. In Belvedere, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Bexley council. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.

Where a hall near Parish Church of All Saints, or anywhere in Belvedere, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Commuter trade near Belvedere station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands.

The process

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool first, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. On site, it takes one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one. In a London area like Belvedere, parking, loading and building access are planned before the day of the work.

  1. We start with a survey, so we know every part of the system before we quote.
  2. We measure the grease at set points along the system, then give you a fixed price.
  3. Once the kitchen has closed and the equipment has cooled, we sheet and protect the area.
  4. Canopy, plenum, filters, duct runs, risers, fan and discharge are all cleaned to TR19® Grease.
  5. Finally the system is re-tested and photographed, and the certificate and report follow.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Related advice

Keeping the system healthy

So the system stays in good health:

  • Clean grease off the canopy surfaces regularly
  • Keep the TR19 certificate and photo report in the maintenance log
  • Switch the fan on before cooking starts
  • Never cook with filters missing or out of place

The certificate records when the clean was done, where and by whom. Keep it in the maintenance log with your fire risk assessment, so it’s to hand when an insurer, fire officer or EHO asks.

Stick to the cleaning interval on the certificate. BESA guidance links the minimum interval to daily cooking hours, so a change in hours may mean a change in interval, and grease readings will show it.

What happens if it’s left?

Grease that’s left only gets thicker. BESA guidance says the mean should not go above 200 microns between cleans, and anywhere reaching 500 microns or more needs a spot clean right away. The longer it’s left, the bigger the job becomes. A busy site in Belvedere builds up dirt and wear quickly, so putting it off makes the eventual job larger.

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all play a part.
