TR19® kitchen extract cleaning in Chelmsford
Chelmsford is the county town of Essex and became a city in 2012. Alongside its restaurants, pubs and hotels, it has the kitchens you’d expect in a county town: council buildings, schools, a university campus and a large hospital. Every one has an extract system that needs regular cleaning. We clean kitchen extract to BESA’s TR19® Grease specification across Chelmsford and the rest of Essex.
We survey first, from photos or on site, then give you a fixed quote, usually within one working day. We clean when the kitchen is closed: evenings, overnight, at weekends or in the holidays. You get a TR19® certificate and a photo report with before and after pictures. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. See kitchen extract cleaning for what a full clean covers.
If you’re not sure when your extract was last cleaned, a TR19 inspection with grease readings shows where you stand. It is also useful when you take over a lease or a new catering contract.
A county town of public sector and high-street kitchens
As the home of Essex County Council and Chelmsford City Council, Chelmsford has a large public sector, with offices, staff canteens and civic buildings. Broomfield Hospital, schools, colleges and the Anglia Ruskin University campus add institutional kitchens that cook to a fixed timetable. That makes planning simple: school and university kitchens are cleaned in the holidays, and hospital and care kitchens between the evening meal and breakfast.
Public sector kitchens often sit inside larger buildings, with extract running through ceiling voids and fire compartments. Where a duct passes through a fire-resisting wall or floor, there is usually a fire damper, and BESA says every fire damper should be tested at least annually. We can test fire dampers in the same programme as the extract clean.
The city centre and riverside have a busy mix of restaurants, bars and pubs, and the villages around Chelmsford have pubs with kitchens in older buildings. Those often have extract that runs through roof spaces or out through rear extensions, sometimes with sections that haven’t been cleaned for years. Our survey finds the full route before we quote.
Where catering in a council building, school or hospital is run by a contract caterer, the contract should say who arranges extract cleaning. We can work with both the caterer and the building owner, so everyone knows when the clean is happening and who holds the certificate. The same applies to cleaning, filter changes and damper testing in the building’s wider ventilation.
Food Standards Agency records list about 194 restaurants, cafés and canteens, 69 takeaways, 52 pubs and bars and 4 hotels and guest houses within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Chelmsford, plus 33 schools and colleges and 36 hospitals, care and childcare premises. Every one that cooks under a canopy has an extract that needs cleaning. Source: FSA food hygiene rating data, October 2026.

Who inspects Chelmsford kitchens
Food businesses are inspected by Chelmsford City Council’s environmental health team, and elsewhere in Essex by the local council. Officers look at the cleanliness of premises and equipment, including extraction, and ratings are published on the Food Standards Agency’s food hygiene ratings site.
Fire safety in workplaces is enforced by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Its officers carry out audits and can take enforcement action under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The responsible person, who in a school or council building may be the council, trust or governing body and in a restaurant the owner or operator, must assess and reduce fire risk. GOV.UK’s guide to workplace fire safety explains the duties.
TR19® is not law. It is BESA’s specification and the benchmark fire officers, EHOs and insurers look to. For public bodies with many buildings, a certificate and photo report for each kitchen makes it easy to show every site is under control.
For schools and council buildings, keep certificates with the building’s fire risk assessment, where the estates team, the fire service and the insurer can all find them.
Chelmsford’s kitchens
Schools, colleges and the university are cleaned in the holidays. Hospitals and care homes are planned with your estates and infection control teams. Council and office buildings need staff restaurant extract, ventilation, AHU and damper work. We clean extract for restaurants and pubs across the city and villages, and for hotels. We also clean grease traps and offer maintenance contracts for several sites.
Many public bodies and trusts in Essex manage several buildings. We can put them all on one maintenance contract, with school kitchens timed to the holidays, hospital and care kitchens to their frequency band and ventilation on a risk-based inspection programme. Each site gets its own certificate and photo report. Restaurant and pub groups can do the same, and our 24/7 emergency line covers fan failures and urgent cleans between visits.
How it works
- Send details. Tell us about your kitchen or building and send a few photos: canopy, filters, access panels and the last certificate if you have one.
- Get a fixed quote. We survey from your photos or on site and give you a fixed price, usually within one working day.
- We clean. We arrive when you’re closed, protect the kitchen and clean the system back to bare metal wherever it can be reached.
- Certified. You get a TR19® certificate and a photo report, with the readings, anything we couldn’t reach and the next clean date.
