Kitchen extract cleaning across E8: what to expect
Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract systems since 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 and are fully insured. We’re often asked to deal with rancid smells from grease in the duct and years of baked-on grease in the ducts, across extract fans, discharge points and vertical risers.
There’s very little for your team to do on the day. A contact on site lets us in at the agreed time and points us to the system, and the rest is down to us. Before we leave, the area is tidied and the paperwork follows.
- We survey the system, from your photos or on site, canopy to discharge.
- Grease thickness is measured and the price is fixed before work starts.
- On the night, the equipment is off and cool and the kitchen is sheeted.
- Filters, canopy and plenum are cleaned, then the ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
- Readings are repeated, photos taken, and your TR19 certificate and photo report issued.
What you will pay
Several systems or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Mention every system or site you need covered, and you’ll get one fixed quote.

Around Hackney Central
Typical jobs here are in premises near Church of St Michael and All Angels, Gayhurst Community School and Bishopsgate Institute Special Collections and Archives. You’ll also find The Urswick School (under half a mile east), Baxter's Court pub (under half a mile north-east), Haggerston Park (0.8 miles south-west) and The Urswick School - A Church of England Secondary School (within half a mile east). There’s a railway station in Hackney Central itself: London Fields station. Nearby you will also find German Hospital (less than half a mile north-west) and Hackney Walk (0.5 miles north-east). Green spaces nearby include Old Ford Island and Tower Hill.
Kitchen extract cleaning around E8
From Homerton, West Hackney and Hackney to its smaller places, E8 has kitchens of every size. Every one gets the same full TR19® clean, from the canopy to the discharge.
London and the South East cover everything from city basements to rural kitchens. The same TR19® standard applies to all of them, in E8 and beyond.
Hackney Central: Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as German Hospital (about less than half a mile north-west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Michael and All Angels, or anywhere in Hackney Central, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.
Keeping the system healthy
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:
- File each certificate with the fire risk assessment
- Make sure every filter is fitted before cooking
- Tell us when the extract starts to drip or smell
- Keep to the recommended cleaning interval
After cleaning, we re-test the same points we measured at the start, so you can see the difference in numbers as well as pictures. A TR19 certificate follows, issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.
Tell whoever looks after the system when something changes. Drips, odours and fan noise often mean grease is building, and a grease thickness test can confirm it.
How we price kitchen extract cleaning
Sites vary more than people expect. The main factors:
- Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
- Travel, parking and unloading
- Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
- How easy every part is to reach
Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before work begins.
Asking for a quote
You do not need the technical terms. Just send:
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
- Wide photos of the system and the area around it
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your pictures and details or, where that isn’t enough, a survey on site. After that, you get a fixed price for the work so you know the cost before work begins.
Common problems we fix in E8
Cooking fat leaves the pan as a fine vapour. As the air cools on its way through the duct, the fat condenses and sticks, building a layer that gets thicker with every service. The grease filters stop some, never all of it.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- Heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs
- Grease smells coming from the extract
- An extract that has never been cleaned to TR19
- Grease dripping from the canopy or filters
Different parts, different methods
Grease filters
We clean the grease filters as part of the job, and put back so they seat correctly. Damaged ones are noted on the report.
Schools, hospitals and care homes
School, hospital and care home kitchens often have fixed hours and long holidays, so cleans can be booked when the kitchen is closed. The certificate and report suit estates and compliance files.
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.
FAQs for E8
Are you accredited for kitchen extract cleaning?
We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 sit alongside that, and we are fully insured.
Will I get a certificate after the clean?
A TR19 certificate, plus a full photo report. It records what was cleaned, what wasn’t accessible and the recommended next clean date.
What is TR19?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
Can you price the work without visiting?
Yes, if we can see what we need. If not, a site survey comes first, and the quote follows that.
Does the law say I must clean to TR19?
TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19 is the benchmark used to show extract grease is under control.
Why do insurers care about extract cleaning?
Grease-filled ducts can carry fire well beyond the kitchen. Many insurers require TR19 cleaning, and may refuse or reduce a claim without proof, so keep every certificate.
Do you work in E8?
Yes. We work across Greater London, Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, and that includes E8.
