Ductwork cleaning in Hertfordshire: how it works

Nobody sees duct grease building, so nobody notices it until something goes wrong. Flames pulled in from the cooking line can ignite it, and fire can then run along the ductwork to other parts of the building. Cleaning the duct takes that fuel away. The work covers vertical risers, multi-storey ducts and bends and junctions, and the jobs we see most are grease pooling at the foot of the riser and duct runs with no cleaning record.

Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and it goes on the report too. All told, the work takes anything from a few hours to several visits, depending on the length of duct.

  1. We trace the duct and find every way in.
  2. We take grease readings along the route.
  3. Once the kitchen has closed, we protect the area and open the panels.
  4. Thick grease is scraped out, then the runs and risers are degreased.
  5. We close up, re-test, photograph and record anything out of reach.

How we quote

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.

Why book with us

  • Each visit written up, with photos
  • Fully insured
  • Every job surveyed first
  • A single point of contact for sites across the South East and London

How to get a quote

Every quote begins with a look at the system, either from photos and details you send or from a site visit. Then we send a fixed price so you know the cost before any work starts.

Local landmarks in Watford

In Watford, that means kitchens and buildings near The Estcourt Arms, Watford St John's Church of England Primary School and Church of St Andrew, among other places. Other local landmarks include Cassiobury Park (0.8 miles west) and The Watford UTC (0.5 miles east). Watford has its own railway station: Watford Junction station. Nearby you’ll also find Hilfield Castle (2.8 miles east) and Charter Place (0.5 miles south). For a walk, there’s Harrow Weald Common.

Kitchen extracts across Hertfordshire

Kitchens across Hertfordshire cook for very different hours, from all-day town-centre sites to part-time hall and school kitchens. The right interval comes from hours of use and grease readings.

Much of our work across London and the South East happens in the evening, overnight or at weekends, so sites in Hertfordshire can keep trading.

Watford: Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Andrew or anywhere around Watford, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. If you run a café or takeaway near Watford Junction station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits.

Why act early?

Grease narrows the duct and slows the air. Less air moves, so heat and smoke stay in the kitchen while the fan strains, and grease may start to leak from joints.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What insurance they carry
  • Whether a survey comes first
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • What records you will receive afterwards

Keeping the system healthy

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Have the grease measured if cooking hours go up
  • Do not switch the extract off early
  • Never cook with a filter missing
  • Book the next clean before the recommended date

You will have a recommended date for the next clean, worked out from the grease we found and how long you cook each day, in line with BESA guidance.

Book the next duct clean before the date passes. A change in cooking hours may change the interval under BESA guidance, and grease thickness testing will show it.

Fixed quotes for ductwork cleaning in Hertfordshire

The price is fixed before any work begins. It’s based on:

  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.

Asking for a quote

You don’t need the technical terms. Just send:

  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Part by part

Horizontal duct runs

Grease settles on the floor of a flat duct run. We scrape out the heavy layer first, then the walls and roof are cleaned too.

Bends and transitions

A bend can hold far more grease than a straight run of the same length. We clean it back by hand and with degreaser, and readings are taken there before and after.

What ductwork cleaning cannot fix

Not every problem is solved by ductwork cleaning, and we’d rather say so up front. It won’t put right:

  • Duct sections that need replacing
  • Fire dampers that do not close (they need testing and remedials)
  • Ductwork that was poorly designed

Your questions about ductwork cleaning in Hertfordshire

What is TR19?

A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.

What happens if there aren’t enough access panels?

Sections out of reach are written down on the report, in line with TR19. New panels can be fitted to reach them in future.

How can I tell if my extract ducts are dirty?

A grease thickness test gives the answer. Readings are taken by Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) or Deposit Thickness Test (DTT). BESA guidance says the mean shouldn’t exceed 200 microns, and 500 or more anywhere needs immediate spot cleaning.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. For many sites, photos and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

Can extra access doors be added to the duct?

Yes, as part of our fits and repairs work. We place them where they help most, and we’ll recommend where.

What types of premises do you cover?

Commercial premises of every kind: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. Work is timed around how each site runs.

What accreditations do you have?

We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.
