Kitchen extract cleaning across AL7: what to expect
Cooking sends fat-laden vapour into the canopy with every service. As it cools, it clings to the inside of the ductwork and keeps building. That layer will burn, and cleaning the whole system is how you keep it under control. The work covers discharge points, horizontal duct runs and vertical risers, and common reasons people get in touch are ductwork thick with old, hardened grease and an extract that has never been cleaned to TR19.
A visit follows the same order every time: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, do the work, clear away and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes as long as the system needs, from a few hours to several planned visits.
- You send pictures or we visit, and the system is surveyed from canopy to discharge.
- Grease thickness is measured and the price is fixed before work starts.
- The kitchen is closed, the equipment cooled and everything nearby protected.
- We work through the system from the canopy to the fan and discharge.
- Readings are repeated, pictures taken, and your TR19 certificate and photo report issued.
What affects the price in AL7
What you pay depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and access to every part of it. You get a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises.

Where we work in AL7
In AL7, we work in places such as Welwyn Garden City, Haldens and Hatfield Hyde and well beyond. We cover every place we list for AL7, 5 in all, and kitchens are cleaned around their opening hours, overnight and at weekends included.
Across England, including AL7, the responsible person has a legal duty to assess and reduce fire risk, and each certificate and photo report is a record you can keep in your log book.
Welwyn Garden City: If you run a café or takeaway near Welwyn Garden City station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits. For schools such as Peartree Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is normally booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.
What affects the quote in AL7
Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:
- The condition we find in the survey
- The scale of the work
- A single visit or a regular plan
- The times the site is available
Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before any work starts.
Helping us quote
When you call or email, these details help:
- Problems your staff have spotted
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- A few general shots of the system
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
For a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. We normally come back within one working day.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. That is our job.
If your staff spot something between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.
Multi-site and managed buildings
Whether it’s one building or many, the standard is the same: diagnosis, a fixed price, work booked around your hours and a written report with pictures.
We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Hertfordshire. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.
What the work involves, part by part
Schools, hospitals and care homes
School, hospital and care home kitchens often have fixed hours and long holidays, so cleans can be planned for holidays or quiet times. The certificate and report suit estates and compliance files.
Restaurant and pub kitchens
Restaurants and pubs tend to cook long hours with plenty of frying and grilling, which can put them in BESA’s 3 or 6-monthly bands. Cleans are done after close, overnight or before opening.
Common problems we fix in AL7
What’s on the menu matters as much as how much is cooked. Frying, grilling and roasting send far more fat into the canopy than steaming or boiling, so two kitchens with the same hours can need very different intervals.
What we are most often called out for:
- A kitchen with no current TR19 certificate
- Missing paperwork after a change of operator
- Cleaning needed before an insurance renewal or survey
- Grease dripping from the canopy or filters
AL7: your questions answered
Which parts of the extract do you clean?
Everything from canopy to discharge: the canopy, the plenum behind the filters, the filters, horizontal ducts, vertical risers, the fan and the discharge, plus attenuators where fitted. Anything we can’t reach is recorded on the report.
Why do insurers care about extract cleaning?
Extract grease is fuel for a kitchen fire, so many insurers want evidence it’s being cleaned to TR19. Each clean gives you a certificate and photo report to show them.
What’s TR19?
BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It is not legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.
Does the law say I must clean to TR19?
The legal duty sits in the Fire Safety Order 2005 rather than in TR19 itself. TR19 is the industry benchmark for meeting that duty in a kitchen extract, and an insurer may refuse or reduce a claim without it.
How much does kitchen extract cleaning cost?
We do not publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: the size of the system, its condition, access and when we can work. You get a fixed price before work begins.
Will the clean disrupt our service?
Cleans are timed to avoid service. Overnight, weekend and between-service cleans are all possible, so you do not lose a service.
What about areas you cannot get to?
We never leave them off the paperwork. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.
