Ductwork cleaning across Hexton

For landlords and multi-site operators

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Hertfordshire. Larger estates can be phased building by building around the people who use them.

Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.

Ductwork cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Hexton

Not every duct has enough access panels. TR19 calls for any section we couldn’t reach to be recorded, and new panels can be fitted to reach it in future. It’s better to know than to assume. Typical jobs include ductwork that has never been cleaned and smells of old cooking grease from the ductwork, on attenuators, vertical risers and multi-storey ducts.

Work in a small place like Hexton starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

Part by part

Bends and transitions

Bends, elbows and changes of size are where grease collects most. Slowing air leaves grease behind, so we clean these points carefully.

Access panels

After cleaning, every panel is closed and sealed, so grease and air stay inside the duct. We’ll tell you if any panel needs replacing.

Aftercare tips

After the visit, a few habits help the work last:

  • File each certificate and photo report in the maintenance log
  • Ask us about extra access panels where sections cannot be reached
  • Keep grease filters clean and fitted whenever you cook
  • Ask for a grease thickness test if the kitchen gets busier

Any section of duct we couldn’t reach is listed on the report and why. You can then decide whether to have access panels fitted.

Extra access panels mean more of the duct gets cleaned each time. Grease you can reach is grease that gets removed.

What we’re called out for in Hexton

Many ducts don’t have enough access panels. Stretches with no way in may never have been touched, and grease there keeps thickening unseen.

It’s time to book a visit if you see:

  • A rancid smell from the extract duct
  • A duct clean needed for an insurer
  • Grease seeping out of the duct seams
  • Gaps where access panels were never fitted

A hospital like Keech Hospice Care, about 3.2 miles south-west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

Questions from Hexton

Can you come to Hexton after we close?

Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. That way a site in Hexton doesn’t have to lose a day’s trading. When you call 0345 646 2711 or email us, mention when the site is quiet.

Do you work in villages like Hexton?

Yes. Hexton is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Some pictures and a quick description of the system plus the address and your hours. If we need more, we’ll ask.

Can you price the work without visiting?

Yes, where the pictures show enough. Otherwise, we book a survey at a time that suits the site, then a fixed quote.

Are you accredited?

Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

Do we lose a day’s trading?

Not normally. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so you keep your normal hours.

Who is the responsible person?

The Fire Safety Order 2005 calls them the responsible person: often the employer, owner or occupier. Landlords, facilities managers and managing agents can also hold responsibility.

How do you protect the area?

We start with protection: floor sheeting and covers over nearby surfaces and equipment. We tidy up and take our waste away before we leave.

What affects the cost of ductwork cleaning

Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:

  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • The number of sites or systems
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re not sure what’s needed, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

What we need to know

We can often survey from pictures. Try to include:

  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Add the site type and your opening hours, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Grease, kitchens and Hexton

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 6 restaurants, cafés and works canteens within about 1.5 miles of central Hexton. Each kitchen that cooks under a canopy sends grease-laden air into a duct, where it cools and settles. Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service covers Hexton. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. Food hygiene inspections in Hexton are the job of North Hertfordshire council’s environmental health team. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Hexton Junior Mixed and Infant School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of St Faith (Church of England) or elsewhere in Hexton, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

When it’s something else

We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what ductwork cleaning won’t do:

  • Parts of the duct with no way in
  • A duct that is too small or badly routed for the kitchen (a design issue)
  • Fire dampers that do not close (they need testing and remedials)

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we will tell you honestly before booking.

Where we work

  • Multi-storey ducts
  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Attenuators
  • Vertical risers
  • Bends and junctions
  • Access panels

What happens on the day

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before work begins, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. The work itself takes anything from a few hours to several visits, depending on the length of duct. Seeing the system in photos first means the trip to Hexton can be planned properly.

  1. The duct route is surveyed and every access point found.
  2. Grease thickness is measured at set points.
  3. Out of hours, the area is protected and the access panels opened.
  4. Thick grease is scraped out, then the runs and risers are degreased.
  5. We close up, re-test, photograph and record anything out of reach.

Preparing for the visit

  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Move anything stored near the system

Ask for a quote

Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your pictures and details or, where that is not enough, a survey on site. After that, you get a fixed price for the work so you know the cost before we start.
