Questions from Standon
Can you come to Standon after we close?
Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. That way a site in Standon doesn’t have to lose a day’s trading. When you call 0345 646 2711, or email photos, mention when the site is quiet.
Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Standon?
That is East Hertfordshire council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Standon. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.
How much notice do you need?
Earlier is better, particularly for night and weekend visits. Quotes normally come back within one working day, and emergencies are covered by our 24/7 line.
How much does ductwork cleaning cost?
The cost depends on the size of the system, its condition, access and timing. Call for a fixed quote, usually ready within one working day.
Do you work in Standon?
Yes. Standon is part of the area we cover, as part of our area across London and the South East.
Do we lose a day’s trading?
Normally not. Out-of-hours visits keep the disruption down. Larger jobs can be phased over several visits so parts stay in use.
Which kinds of sites do you work on?
Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a small pub to a hospital. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.
How often does extract ductwork need cleaning?
The minimum depends on how long the kitchen cooks each day: every 3 months for 12 to 16 hours, 6 months for 6 to 12 hours and 12 months for 2 to 6 hours. Measured grease sets the real interval.
How we handle ductwork cleaning in Standon
Nobody sees duct grease building, so nobody notices it until something goes wrong. A flare-up drawn up from the range can light it, and fire can then run along the ductwork to other parts of the building. Removing it is the whole point. The work covers multi-storey ducts, access panels and bends and junctions, and common reasons people get in touch are thick crusts of old grease along the duct and grease pooling at the foot of the riser.
Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.
The sign-off is always in writing: a dated report with photos of the work, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

What the work involves, part by part
Attenuators and discharge
Some systems have attenuators to reduce noise, and their linings can soak up grease. We clean what can be reached and note anything that cannot.
Horizontal duct runs
Flat runs of duct link the canopy to the riser or the outside wall. They collect grease as the air cools and slows, and we clean them section by section through access panels.
Leave it or put it right?
TR19® is not law, but the duty to manage fire risk is. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, including the grease inside the extract ductwork. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.
What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and why the quote is fixed before any work starts.

What ductwork cleaning cannot fix
We’ll always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what ductwork cleaning will not do:
- Duct sections that need replacing
- Parts of the duct with no way in
- Undersized or badly laid-out ducts
Not sure which it is? You can call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will tell you honestly.

The process
Your staff don’t need to do much on the day. Someone lets us in at the agreed time and shows us where everything is, and the rest is down to us. Afterwards, the area is left tidy and the written report follows. Rural roads and tight entrances are worth telling us about before a visit to Standon.
- First we diagnose: the route, the access and the grease levels.
- You get a fixed price before work starts.
- Each section is cleaned in turn through its access panel.
- We take extra care at bends and at the foot of risers.
- The duct is signed off with readings, pictures and a next clean date.
Getting ready for the visit
- Clear loose items from the work area
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
Ask for a quote
The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Add the site type and your opening hours, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.
Advice
Ductwork cleaning around Standon
The Food Standards Agency lists about 7 bars, pubs and nightclubs as registered food businesses within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Standon. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. In Standon, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from East Hertfordshire council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. The fire and rescue service for Standon is Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.
Where a hall near Church of St Mary, or anywhere in Standon, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Bursars and site managers at schools such as Roger De Clare First CofE School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Standon (Much Hadham Palace is about 2.7 miles south-east), fitting access panels needs care.

What’s near Standon
Typical jobs here are in premises near Ralph Sadleir Middle School and The Bell Public House. Well-known places in the area include Moated mound (3.5 miles east).
Looking after it afterwards
A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:
- Keep to the interval on the report
- Ask for a grease thickness test if the kitchen gets busier
- Run the extract fan throughout service
- Get panels fitted where the duct couldn’t be cleaned
After the clean, the same points are tested again, so the report shows the before and after figures. Photos of each section go alongside them.
Have access panels fitted where sections cannot be reached. Grease you can reach is grease that gets removed.
What affects the cost of ductwork cleaning
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:
- One-off work versus a regular cycle
- The times the site is available
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
- The scale of the work
Combining work into one visit or one programme often makes better use of the time. Mention every system or site you need covered, and you’ll get one fixed quote.
What to send for a quote
Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
- A few general shots of the system
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
There’s no standard price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from photos or a survey, and then give you a fixed quote. To start, ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that is where we come in.
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
