About our ductwork cleaning in The Folly
Duct cleaning is the hardest part of an extract clean, and the part most often skipped. Sections with no way in can go uncleaned for years. We open up every reachable section and record any we cannot reach, so you know exactly where you stand. If you’re dealing with duct runs with no cleaning record and proof of duct cleaning for the insurer, we can put it right.
In a small place like The Folly, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.
Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. That’s why every job is written up in a report with photos, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

What your team can do, and what needs us
A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. That’s our job.
Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Signs you need ductwork cleaning in The Folly
The further the air travels from the cooking, the cooler it gets. As it cools, the grease it carries condenses onto the duct walls, which is why ducts go on gathering grease well beyond the filters.
It’s time to book a visit if you see:
- Thick deposits at the bottom of a vertical duct
- An insurer asking for TR19 evidence
- A duct nobody has opened in years
- A rancid smell from the extract duct
Term dates shape school work: for a school like St Helen's Church of England Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

Your questions about ductwork cleaning in The Folly
Is The Folly within the area you cover?
Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and The Folly is covered. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Which fire authority looks after The Folly?
That’s Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.
Can you clean ductwork with no access panels?
Sections out of reach are written down on the report, as TR19 expects. New panels can be fitted to reach them in future.
Which accreditations do you hold?
CHAS, SafeContractor, ISO 9001 and BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We’ve been trading since 2009 and we’re fully insured.
What is TR19?
TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
Can extra access doors be added to the duct?
Yes, we install duct access panels. Panels go where they give the best access to sections that couldn’t be reached, and we will recommend where.
What do you need from me for a quote?
Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, along with a few photos and any previous report.
How often does extract ductwork need cleaning?
The duct is cleaned as part of the whole system, at intervals set by BESA guidance, from every 3 months for heavy use to every 12 months for light use. Grease thickness testing shows whether that is often enough.
What happens if it’s left?
Fire inside a duct is out of sight and out of reach. The duct can carry it to rooms, floors or roof spaces well away from the kitchen, which is why the duct matters as much as the canopy. If the system at a site near The Folly fails, there may be nowhere nearby to move to.
Several systems or sites on one quote can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we will price it together.

Aftercare tips
A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:
- Flag drips from the duct right away
- Leave a way through to the access panels
- Book the next clean before the recommended date
- Ask us about extra access panels where sections cannot be reached
Every panel we open is refitted when we finish, and the area around them is cleaned down. Waste grease and water are taken away.
Extra access panels mean more of the duct gets cleaned each time. It does not stop grease forming, but it stops it building unseen.
Ductwork cleaning in The Folly: the local picture
Food Standards Agency records list about 11 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens in The Folly and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Wherever those kitchens cook under a canopy, the horizontal runs and risers need cleaning as well as the hood. The Folly sits within the area of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order. In The Folly, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from St Albans City council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.
If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like St Albans City Hospital about 4.2 miles south, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near St Helen's Church or elsewhere in The Folly, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.

The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes from a few hours to more than one visit, depending on duct length and access, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. - A fixed quote follows, based on what we found.

Advice
How the job changes from site to site
Horizontal duct runs
Grease settles on the floor of a flat duct run. We scrape out the heavy layer first, then the walls and roof are cleaned too.
Attenuators and discharge
Attenuators, where fitted, quieten the extract, but they can hold grease in their linings. We clean what can be reached and note anything that cannot.
