How kitchen extract cleaning works in HP2

We treat an extract system much as a doctor treats a patient: survey first, clean second, sign-off last. The sign-off is a TR19 certificate with a photo report, issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. We are often asked to deal with a TR19 certificate needed for the insurer and an extract that has never been cleaned to TR19, on extract fans, horizontal duct runs and discharge points.

We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the job takes one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one.

  1. First comes a survey of the whole system, by pictures or a visit.
  2. We measure the grease at set points along the system, then give you a fixed price.
  3. On the day, cooking equipment is switched off and left to cool, and everything nearby is sheeted.
  4. We clean the canopy, plenum, filters, ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
  5. Readings and pictures are taken again, and you receive a TR19 certificate and photo report.

What you’ll pay

We don’t list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll talk you through it.

Ask for a quote

Every quote begins with a look at the system, either from photos and details you send or from a site visit. After that, you get a fixed price for the work, before work begins.

Kitchen extract cleaning across HP2: local notes

Kitchens across HP2 cook for very different hours, from all-day town-centre sites to part-time hall and school kitchens. The right interval comes from hours of use and grease readings.

Across London and the South East, we work evenings, overnight and weekends, so sites across HP2 do not have to lose a day.

Hemel Hempstead: Historic houses near Hemel Hempstead, such as High Elms Manor about 4.6 miles south-east, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St Barnabas or elsewhere in Hemel Hempstead, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

What affects the quote in HP2

A fixed price needs a few facts first. We check:

  • The condition of the system
  • The number of sites or systems
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • The size of the system

What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why every job is surveyed first, and why the quote is fixed before any work starts.

Helping us quote

There’s no need for technical detail. Just send:

  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings

There’s no standard price list, because no two systems are the same. We look at your system first, from pictures or on a visit, then send a fixed quote. To get going, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos.

Aftercare tips

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:

  • Diarise the next clean as soon as you get the certificate
  • Wash or exchange the filters often
  • Never cook with filters missing or out of place
  • Wipe the canopy down at the end of each day

The report gives a recommended date for the next clean, set from your daily cooking hours and the readings we took. We can put the system on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly plan, so the date is not missed.

Tell whoever looks after the system when something changes. Grease dripping from the canopy, a burning smell or a fan that sounds rough are all signs of build-up, and a grease thickness test can confirm it.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We will take a look and give you a fixed quote.

Why it fails

The reason for all this is fire. A flare-up on the range can be drawn up into the canopy and duct, and once grease in the duct catches, fire can spread through the building’s ductwork. For a kitchen in HP2, keeping that fuel under control is part of the fire risk assessment.

Most sites get in touch when they notice one of these:

  • A kitchen taken over without any extract records
  • Stale cooking odours from the system
  • Heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs
  • A TR19 certificate needed for the insurer

Leave it or put it right?

Environmental health officers inspect food businesses, in HP2 as everywhere else, and a greasy canopy or dripping filters won’t go unnoticed. Keeping the extract clean helps the whole kitchen pass muster.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
  • Whether VAT is included
  • If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate

Common questions in HP2

Are you accredited for kitchen extract cleaning?

Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 sit alongside that, and we are fully insured.

Do insurers need proof of extract cleaning?

Many policies require TR19 cleaning, and insurers often ask to see the certificate. Without proof, a claim can be refused or reduced, so it’s worth checking your policy wording.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, depending on what the system needs.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. For many sites, pictures and a few details are enough, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. One number covers all your sites across London and the South East, with visits on a regular schedule.

How much notice should we give?

Book as early as you can for planned work, particularly if your next visit is nearly due. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.

Does the law say I must clean to TR19?

TR19® itself isn’t law. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19 is the benchmark used to show extract grease is under control.
