Waterdale kitchens: local notes
According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 12 pubs, bars and clubs in Waterdale and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Food hygiene inspections in Waterdale are the job of Three Rivers council’s environmental health team. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Waterdale sits within the area of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.
Historic houses near Waterdale, such as High Elms Manor about 0.5 miles south-west, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Leavesden Hospital about 0.8 miles south-west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. Bursars and site managers at schools such as Parmiter's School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

About our ductwork cleaning in Waterdale
Duct Doctor has cleaned kitchen extract ductwork since 2009, working across London and the South East. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, our duct cleaning is done to BESA TR19® Grease, with each certificate issued through the BESCA portal. The work covers multi-storey ducts, bends and junctions and vertical risers, and common reasons people get in touch are a grease test showing the duct is overdue and thick crusts of old grease along the duct.
In a small place like Waterdale, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, where grease settles in the flat sections. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.
The sign-off is always in writing: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

Waterdale: your questions answered
Who is the fire and rescue service for Waterdale?
It’s Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Waterdale. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.
Can a school canteen extract in Waterdale be done out of term time?
Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. Food Standards Agency records list about 14 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Waterdale. You can call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with the dates the site is empty.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes. Photos often do the job, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.
How long will the duct clean take?
It depends on the length of the duct, the number of access panels and how much grease there is. Typically it takes anything from a few hours to several visits, depending on the length of duct.
Do we have to stop cooking while the ducts are cleaned?
When the kitchen is closed. Long ducts can be split across visits, with the kitchen ready to cook each morning.
Can you quote from photos?
Yes, for many jobs. Send wide shots, close-ups of any access panels and anything that worries you, and a fixed quote usually follows within one working day. Some sites still need a visit, and we’ll say so.
Can you look after several sites?
Yes. One number covers all your sites in our area, with visits on a regular schedule.
Will I get a report after the ducts are cleaned?
When the duct is cleaned as part of a full TR19 clean, you get a TR19 certificate and a photo report. The report shows readings, pictures and any sections we couldn’t reach.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that’s where we come in.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

What a clean will not put right
We won’t sell you work that does not address the problem, so these are the things it will not cover:
- Ductwork that was poorly designed
- A worn-out fan that needs replacing
- Duct sealed behind fixed ceilings or walls
If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will say what we think.
Parts of the system we cover

What affects the quote in Waterdale
Every site gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:
- How many systems or sites are involved
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
- The size of the system
- The condition of the system
We don’t list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we will talk you through it.
What we need to know
What to send for a quote:
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- Your last certificate, test record or report
If you need ductwork cleaning in Waterdale, call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form. Tell us what kind of premises it is and when it’s open, and send photos or your last report if you can. We usually send a fixed quote within one working day.
Aftercare tips
No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:
- Keep grease filters clean and fitted whenever you cook
- Keep the fan on while anything is cooking
- Get panels fitted where the duct couldn’t be cleaned
- Keep to the interval on the report
When the duct is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. It shows when and where the clean was done and by whom.
Keep the fan on throughout service. When the air stops, grease settles in the duct, so switching off early adds to the build-up.
What we do, step by step
Night work is normal for us. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes a shift or more, depending on the length of the runs and the number of access points. Photos of the system and how to reach it help us plan a visit to Waterdale.
- First the duct route is traced and every access point noted.
- Grease readings are taken at set points along the duct.
- Through the access panels, thick grease is removed by hand first.
- Next the ducts and risers are degreased, using whatever suits the deposit.
- Post-clean readings and pictures go into the report, with any unreachable section listed.
How to prepare
- Agree a time when the area can be out of use
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Move anything stored near the system
How to get a quote
Here’s what helps us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, a few pictures and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Once you have those, ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.
Advice
Part by part
Multi-storey and shared buildings
Ducts in taller or shared buildings often run past other occupiers. Access is planned with the building’s managers, so the clean is done safely and quietly.
Attenuators and discharge
Some systems have attenuators to reduce noise, but they can hold grease in their linings. We clean what can be reached and note anything that cannot.
Managing agents and facilities teams in Waterdale
We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we’ll send a fixed quote.
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.
