Watford kitchens: local notes
The Food Standards Agency lists about 43 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 7 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses as registered food businesses within about 1.5 miles of central Watford. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. It’s Watford council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Watford. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Watford is covered by Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.
Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Andrew or anywhere around Watford, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. If you run a café or takeaway near Watford Junction station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits.

About our ductwork cleaning in Watford
No two duct runs are the same, in Watford or anywhere else. A few metres to an outside wall, or a riser up through the building to a roof fan. We map the route during the survey, so we know where to get in and how long it will take. If you’re dealing with thick crusts of old grease along the duct and grease seeping out of the duct seams, we can help, from vertical risers, attenuators and multi-storey ducts onwards.
In Watford, extract cleaning fits around service: late at night, early in the morning or on a closed day. Bigger sites can be done kitchen by kitchen, so cooking carries on elsewhere.
Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

How the visit works
Protection comes first: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. Then we make the system safe and start. The work on site takes a few hours for a short run, longer for long runs and tall risers, and we clear up before we go. We’ll ask where we can park in Watford and how to get equipment to the system, as those shape the visit.
- Diagnosis: a survey of the duct’s route, size and access.
- You get a fixed price before work starts.
- We clean section by section, working from panel to panel.
- Bends, risers and the base of each riser get extra attention.
- The duct is signed off with readings, pictures and a next clean date.

Advice
Part by part
Attenuators and discharge
The discharge is where the duct ends and air leaves the building. It can gather grease and mark the wall or roof around it, so it’s cleaned as far as safe access allows.
Access panels
Panels have to seal properly once they’re closed so the duct stays tight. We’ll tell you if any panel needs replacing.
Watford questions
Which fire authority looks after Watford?
That is Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.
Which environmental health team covers Watford?
Kitchens in Watford are inspected by Watford council’s environmental health officers. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes, 24/7. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and the emergency line covers the rest.
How often should kitchen ducts be cleaned?
BESA guidance sets minimum intervals by daily cooking hours: every 3 months for 12 to 16 hours, 6 months for 6 to 12 hours and 12 months for 2 to 6 hours. Measured grease sets the real interval.
Can you look after several sites?
Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and we’ll quote them together.
What do you need from me for a quote?
Some pictures and a quick description of the system plus the address and your hours. We will ask for anything else we need.
Can you clean ductwork with no access panels?
Ductwork needs access to be cleaned. Those parts are listed, and we can install panels so they’re reached next time.
How much does ductwork cleaning cost in Watford?
Every site is different, so each gets its own fixed quote. To get one, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us about the site and its opening hours.
Why act early in Watford
Fire inside a duct is out of sight and out of reach. The duct can carry it to rooms, floors or roof spaces well away from the kitchen, so cleaning the duct is as important as cleaning the hood. Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers can all ask for records.
You won’t find a price list here, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. Call for a fixed quote, and we will talk you through it.
Why book with us
- Ventilation hygiene specialists since 2009
- A single point of contact for sites across the South East and London
- A written report with photos after each visit
- We are fully insured
When it’s something else
Not every problem is solved by ductwork cleaning, and we’d rather say so up front. It won’t put right:
- Fire dampers that do not close (they need testing and remedials)
- Sections that cannot be reached safely without new access (those are recorded, and panels can be fitted)
- A duct that is too small or badly routed for the kitchen (a design issue)
Not sure which it is? You can call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.
What the work covers
- Vertical risers
- Horizontal duct runs
- Attenuators
- Multi-storey ducts
- Bends and junctions
- Access panels
Looking after it afterwards
Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:
- Make sure filters are seated properly
- Keep access panels clear of stored items
- Store the certificate with the fire risk assessment
- Ask for a grease thickness test if the kitchen gets busier
The report names every part of the duct that couldn’t be reached, with the reason. You can then decide whether to have access panels fitted.
Run the extract the whole time the kitchen is cooking. When the air stops, grease settles in the duct, so switching off early adds to the build-up.
Do you need ductwork cleaning in Watford?
Air cools as it moves away from the canopy. Cooling air drops its grease onto the inside of the duct, which is why ducts go on gathering grease well beyond the filters.
It’s time to book a visit if you see:
- Stale grease odours from the duct
- A duct clean needed for an insurer
- Sections of duct with no access panels
- Years of grease along the duct floor
For schools such as Watford St John's Church of England Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is normally booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- Whether they’re fully insured
- Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
- Whether the figure could change on the day
For landlords and multi-site operators
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare in Watford and across Hertfordshire. Work can be phased by floor, building or site around the people who use them.
