How kitchen extract cleaning works in WD17
Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract systems since 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers plenums and filters, extract fans and vertical risers, and people most often call us about a new tenancy or takeover with no cleaning history and an extract that no longer clears the smoke.
Each visit runs to the same pattern: protect the area, make the system safe, do the work, tidy up and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one.
- We start with a survey, so we know every part of the system before we quote.
- We measure the grease at set points along the system, then give you a fixed price.
- With the kitchen closed and equipment off and cool, the area is sheeted.
- Canopy, plenum, filters, duct runs, risers, fan and discharge are all cleaned to TR19® Grease.
- We test again, photograph the result and issue your TR19 certificate and photo report.
What you’ll pay
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why every job is surveyed first, and the price is agreed before work begins.

Kitchen extracts across WD17
From Watford, Cassiobury and Oxhey to its smaller places, WD17 has kitchens of every size. Each extract is cleaned to the same TR19® standard, canopy to discharge.
Across England, including WD17, the responsible person has a legal duty to assess and reduce fire risk, and each certificate and photo report is a record you can keep in your log book.
Cassiobury: School kitchens, at schools like Watford St John's Church of England Primary School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. If you cook for passing trade around Watford Junction station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer.
Keeping the system healthy
Results last longer with the right care. Here’s what we suggest:
- Wipe the canopy down at the end of each day
- Don’t let the canopy gutters overflow
- Keep the cleaning records where you can find them
- Run the extract fan throughout cooking
The kitchen is left clean and ready for the next service. Waste grease and water are contained and removed, and equipment can be switched back on once we’ve gone.
Regular filter cleaning is the simplest thing a kitchen can do. A filter that’s clean and seated properly stops more grease getting into the plenum, so the ductwork stays cleaner for longer.
Part by part
Grease filters
A filter that is missing or bent lets grease straight past. We check they fit as they should when we refit them, and flag any that don’t.
Restaurant and pub kitchens
Busy restaurant and pub kitchens often cook for long hours, frying and grilling, which can put them in BESA’s 3 or 6-monthly bands. Cleans are done after close, overnight or before opening.
What we’re called out for in WD17
Grease in the extract matters because it burns. A flare-up on the range can be drawn up into the canopy and duct, where burning grease can carry a fire along the ducts and into other parts of the building. For a kitchen in WD17, keeping that fuel under control is part of the fire risk assessment.
The symptoms we are asked about most include:
- Extraction mentioned at an environmental health visit
- A system with no record of a TR19 clean
- Fat running down the canopy edge
- Poor airflow at the canopy
How we price kitchen extract cleaning
We don’t publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. The quote depends on:
- When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
- Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
- Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
- The condition we find in the survey
No two sites are the same, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.
What we need to know
There’s no need for technical detail. Just send:
- Your last certificate, test record or report
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
- Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Logging matters as much as cleaning. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that is where we come in.
WD17 questions
Does the law say I must clean to TR19?
TR19® itself isn’t law. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19 is the benchmark used to show extract grease is under control.
What happens to the waste?
Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. None of it is left on site.
Which kinds of sites do you work on?
Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a small pub to a hospital. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes, 24/7. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, with the emergency line covering every other hour.
Can you price the work without visiting?
Yes, if we can see what we need. Otherwise, we book a survey at a time that suits the site, and the quote follows that.
How do you keep the site clean during the work?
Protection goes down first: floor sheeting and covers over nearby surfaces and equipment. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.
Do we have to close the kitchen for the clean?
Out of hours: evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. We need the equipment cool, and we leave the kitchen ready to cook.
