Kitchen extract cleaning in HP1: how it works

A closed kitchen is not earning, so the timing of a clean matters. Cleans are booked for evenings, overnight or weekends, or during holidays where a site closes for them. With the equipment off and cool and the area sheeted, we clean and hand the kitchen back ready for the next service. The work covers plenums and filters, discharge points and extract fans, and the jobs we see most are ductwork thick with old, hardened grease and a new tenancy or takeover with no cleaning history.

We turn up at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before we start, and the area around the work is covered and protected. On site, it takes a few hours for a small kitchen, longer for a large system.

  1. We survey the system first, from your pictures and details or on a site visit.
  2. Grease readings are taken at set points and you get a fixed quote.
  3. With the kitchen closed and equipment off and cool, the area is sheeted.
  4. We clean the canopy, plenum, filters, ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
  5. Finally the system is re-tested and photographed, and the certificate and report follow.

How we quote

Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before any work starts.

What you get with us

Ask for a quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Warner's End: Volunteers running a hall kitchen near St Alban's Church, or anywhere in Warner's End, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. A hospital like Hemel Hempstead Hospital, about 0.9 miles south-east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

What kitchen extract cleaning cannot fix

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • A canopy that’s too small or a system that was badly designed
  • Faulty fire dampers in the duct
  • Blocked drains from a neglected grease trap (a separate service)

Different parts, different methods

Canopy and plenum

Canopies vary from a single hood to long runs over several appliances, each section is cleaned and photographed before and after.

Schools, hospitals and care homes

Some healthcare kitchens never fully close. Cleans are planned between meals or overnight, so residents and patients are not disturbed.

Looking after it afterwards

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:

  • Switch the fan on before cooking starts
  • Keep the TR19 certificate and photo report in the maintenance log
  • Refit filters properly after cleaning
  • Clean the grease filters regularly between TR19 cleans

The kitchen is left clean and ready for the next service. Grease and dirty water are collected and taken off site, and equipment can be switched back on once we’ve gone.

Book the next clean before the last one runs out. If the kitchen starts cooking longer hours, the interval should be looked at again, and grease readings will show it.

What affects the cost of kitchen extract cleaning

The survey tells us what the work involves. We look at:

  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • The scale of the work
  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids

A single site or a whole portfolio, we price it on the same basis: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. The price is fixed before we start.

What we need to know

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. With your enquiry, please include:

  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either from photos and details you send or from a site visit. After that, you get a fixed price for the work so you know the cost before we start.

Signs you need kitchen extract cleaning

Grease in an extract starts as vapour. As the air cools on its way through the duct, the fat condenses and sticks, building a layer that gets thicker with every service. Filters catch some of it, but never all.

Most sites get in touch after spotting something like this:

  • Heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs
  • Grease drips onto cooking equipment
  • Cleaning needed before an insurance renewal or survey
  • A smoky, hot kitchen with weak extraction

Questions from HP1

What do I get after the clean?

A TR19 certificate and a photo report. Certificates are issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal, and the report shows before and after photos, readings, any areas not reached and the next clean date.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

TR19 isn’t written into law, but the responsible person still has a legal duty under the Fire Safety Order 2005. TR19 is the standard insurers and fire officers expect, and many policies require it.

Can you price the work without visiting?

Yes, for many jobs. Send a few wide pictures plus close-ups of panels, filters or grilles, and a fixed quote normally follows within one working day. Some sites still need a visit, and we’ll say so.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, depending on what the system needs.

How do you protect the area?

With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. The work is kept contained and leave the area clean.

Are you a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member?

We clean to BESA TR19® Grease as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, with certificates issued through the BESCA portal. We’ve been trading since 2009.

What happens if you can’t reach some of it?

They’re marked on the report. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, and we can fit those.
