What the work involves, part by part

Bends and transitions

Transitions from the canopy spigot into the duct catch a lot of grease. We reach it from the plenum side where possible.

Attenuators and discharge

The last section of duct before the discharge is often the coolest, which can mean heavier deposits. It’s tested and cleaned along with the rest.

Ductwork cleaning in Berkhamsted, done properly

Once air leaves the canopy, it travels through ductwork that most people never see. Grease settles along every metre of it, and that is where a kitchen fire can travel. Our ductwork cleaning reaches inside the runs and risers through access panels, to BESA TR19® Grease. The work covers horizontal duct runs, attenuators and bends and junctions, and common reasons people get in touch are hardened, baked-on grease in long horizontal runs and a rancid smell from the extract duct.

In a town like Berkhamsted, most of the kitchen extracts we’re asked about belong to restaurants, cafés, pubs, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. Whatever the kitchen, the canopy, filters, duct and fan all collect grease.

The sign-off is always in writing: a dated report with pictures of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

Fixed quotes for ductwork cleaning in Berkhamsted

A fixed price needs a few facts first. We check:

  • What state the system is in
  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • The scale of the work
  • A single visit or a regular plan

What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why every job is surveyed first, and why the quote is fixed before we start.

Helping us quote

We can often survey from pictures. The most useful are:

  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Any previous report or certificate

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from your pictures and details or, where that is not enough, a survey on site. After that, you get a fixed price for the work so you know the cost before we start.

Ductwork cleaning in Berkhamsted: the local picture

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 44 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 13 sandwich bars and takeaways within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Berkhamsted. Where they cook under a canopy, grease does not stop at the filters: it settles along the duct and up the riser. Berkhamsted is covered by Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. It’s Dacorum council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Berkhamsted. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

For kitchens close to Berkhamsted station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of All Saints or elsewhere in Berkhamsted, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Hemel Hempstead Hospital about 4.5 miles east, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

Common questions in Berkhamsted

Do you work overnight in Berkhamsted?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. That way a site in Berkhamsted doesn’t have to lose a day’s trading. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

Which fire service covers Berkhamsted?

That is Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not usually. We need the work area to ourselves while we’re on site, so we book a time when it would be closed anyway.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. We always survey first, either from photos and details you send or on a site visit. A fixed quote follows.

Will I get a report after the ducts are cleaned?

Readings, pictures and, for a full clean, a TR19 certificate. The report says when the next clean is due.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.

How do you clean inside the ductwork?

Each section is cleaned through its own panel. Heavy grease comes out by hand, and what’s left is degreased, with readings taken before and after.

What information do you need?

A short description and a few pictures, with the address and opening hours. If we need more, we will ask.

For landlords and multi-site operators

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we can quote for the whole system.

Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

What a clean will not put right

We’d rather tell you now than book work that won’t help, so these are the things it won’t cover:

  • Ductwork that was poorly designed
  • A failed fan motor at the end of the duct (a fan repair job)
  • A damper stuck open in the duct

If you are not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will give you a straight answer before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Bends and junctions
  • Access panels
  • Vertical risers
  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Attenuators
  • Multi-storey ducts

How the visit works

When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the pictures you sent. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. From there, it takes a shift or more, depending on the length of the runs and the number of access points. We arrive in Berkhamsted once you’ve closed and leave the site ready for the morning.

  1. We start by working out how the duct runs and where it can be opened.
  2. Set points along the runs are tested for grease.
  3. Through the access panels, thick grease is removed by hand first.
  4. Next the ducts and risers are degreased, using whatever suits the deposit.
  5. Post-clean readings and photos go into the report, with any unreachable section listed.

Preparing for the visit

  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Clear loose items from the work area
  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site

How to get a quote

Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you will usually have a fixed price within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

What your team can do, and what needs us

When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We will take a look and give you a fixed quote.

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

Between visits

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Diarise the next duct clean
  • Flag drips from the duct straight away
  • Run the extract fan throughout service
  • Make sure filters are seated properly

Any section of duct we couldn’t reach is listed on the report, with the reason. We can fit access panels so those sections are cleaned next time.

Grease that never reaches the duct never needs cleaning out of it. Keep the filters clean, well fitted and in place whenever you cook.
