How kitchen extract cleaning works in HA7
Few kitchens can stop cooking for a day so the extract can be cleaned. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends, or between services where the kitchen has a gap. With the equipment off and cool and the area sheeted, we clean and hand the kitchen back ready for the next service. Common call-outs are for a kitchen with no current TR19 certificate and a TR19 certificate needed for the insurer, across extract fans, plenums and filters and canopies and hoods.
We’re used to working while the site is closed. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes as long as the system needs, from a few hours to several planned visits.
- We survey the system first, from your pictures and details or on a site visit.
- Set points are tested for grease thickness and the quote is fixed before we start.
- With the kitchen closed and equipment off and cool, the area is sheeted.
- We clean the canopy, plenum, filters, ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
- Finally the system is re-tested and photographed, and the certificate and report follow.
How we quote
We don’t list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email, and we will explain what it covers.

Getting a quote
Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your photos and details or, where that isn’t enough, a survey on site. After that, you get a fixed price for the work, before we start.
Near you in Stanmore
We work in commercial kitchens and buildings around Avanti House School, Sahara Lounge pub and Whitchurch Primary School & Nursery, among other places. Also close by are Canons Park (0.7 miles east), Whitchurch Junior School (within half a mile south) and Church of St John (0.6 miles north-west). For rail, the closest station is Harrow & Wealdstone station, about 1.9 miles south-west of the centre. Nearby you’ll also find Hilfield Castle (3.2 miles north-west) and Cat Museum (1.7 miles south-west). Open spaces near Stanmore include Darland's Lake and Stanmore Country Park.
Kitchen extract cleaning across HA7: local notes
Across HA7, from Stanmore, Bushey and Edgware outwards, kitchens range from town-centre restaurants and takeaways to pubs, hotels, schools and care homes. Each extract is cleaned to the same TR19® standard, canopy to discharge.
London and the South East cover everything from city basements to rural kitchens. Wherever the site is in HA7, the work is done to the same TR19® standard.
Stanmore: If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Headstone Manor is about 2.5 miles south-west), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning. Term dates shape school work: for a school like Whitchurch Primary School & Nursery, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.
What happens if it’s left?
If there’s a fire and the extract hasn’t been cleaned, the paperwork becomes the problem. Many policies require cleaning to TR19, and an insurer can refuse or reduce a claim without proof. A current certificate is far easier to produce than an explanation.
Comparing quotes
- When the next visit should be, and why
- Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
- Whether the figure could change on the day
- When they can work, and whether that’s outside your opening hours
Part by part
Canopy and plenum
Behind the grease filters sits the plenum, which daily cleaning never reaches. With the filters out, the plenum is scraped and degreased.
Schools, hospitals and care homes
Some healthcare kitchens never fully close. Cleans are planned between meals or overnight with as little disruption as possible.
For landlords and multi-site operators
Whether it’s one building or many, you get the same standard: diagnosis, a fixed price, work booked around your hours and a written report with pictures.
We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we will send a fixed quote.
Honest limits
Before booking, it helps to know what’s not included:
- A fan motor that has burnt out
- A grease trap that needs emptying
- Faulty fire dampers in the duct
What staff can safely do
Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that’s where we come in.
Your questions about kitchen extract cleaning in HA7
Do I have to clean my extract to TR19 by law?
No law names TR19 directly, but the responsible person still has a legal duty under the Fire Safety Order 2005. TR19 is the standard insurers and fire officers expect, and many policies require it.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes, of course. Send details of the systems and how they’re used and we’ll propose a schedule with a fixed quote.
Which parts of the extract do you clean?
A TR19 Grease clean covers the full extract route, not just the canopy. Canopy, plenum, filters, ductwork, risers, fan and discharge are all included, reached through access panels where necessary.
Are you accredited for kitchen extract cleaning?
Our work is to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, and certificates go through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009.
How much notice do you need?
Earlier is better, particularly for night and weekend visits. Quotes normally come back within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.
What do you do with what you remove?
Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. We don’t leave it behind.
Do you look at the system first?
Yes. Photos often do the job, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.
