Our kitchen extract cleaning service in SG11
Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract systems since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Typical jobs include years of baked-on grease in the ducts and poor airflow at the canopy, on extract fans, horizontal duct runs and vertical risers.
Night work is normal for us. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one.
- Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the system and how it’s reached.
- We record grease levels at set points, then fix the price.
- After the kitchen closes, we sheet the area and set up to contain grease and water.
- The treatment: heavy grease scraped out, then every part degreased to TR19® Grease.
- Then the clean bill of health: readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next date.

Kitchen extracts across SG11
In SG11, we work in places such as Puckeridge, Braughing and Little Hadham and well beyond. We cover every place we list for SG11, 16 in all, and kitchens are cleaned around their opening hours, overnight and at weekends included.
In England, the Fire Safety Order puts the duty on the responsible person to assess and reduce fire risk, and a TR19® certificate and photo report give you a record of the work.
Puckeridge: A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of St Mary or elsewhere in Puckeridge, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Much Hadham Palace is about 3.3 miles south-east), access may need planning.
Leave it or put it right?
TR19® is not law, but the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is. The responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and in a kitchen that means keeping extract grease under control. TR19 is the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to.
Questions to ask before you book
- When the next visit should be, and why
- If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate
- Whether the quote shows VAT
- Whether a survey comes first
Signs you need kitchen extract cleaning
A lot of duct grease gets there because the filters let it through. Filters that are bent, badly fitted, missing or left uncleaned let more fat into the plenum and duct, and it does not stop until it reaches the fan.
What we’re most often called out for:
- A kitchen with no current TR19 certificate
- An overdue clean flagged by an EHO or fire officer
- Rancid smells from grease in the duct
- Fat running down the canopy edge
Looking after it afterwards
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Empty any grease troughs or cups on the canopy
- Diarise the next clean as soon as you get the certificate
- Run the extract fan throughout cooking
- Clean the grease filters regularly between TR19 cleans
When the clean is finished, grease readings are taken again at the same points, so you can see the difference in numbers as well as photos. Your TR19 certificate is then issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.
Clean the grease filters often, not just on clean day. A filter that’s clean and seated properly stops more grease getting into the plenum, so the ductwork stays cleaner for longer.
What the work involves, part by part
Restaurant and pub kitchens
Busy restaurant and pub kitchens often cook for long hours, frying and grilling, which can put them in BESA’s 3 or 6-monthly bands. Cleans are done after close, overnight or before opening.
Ductwork and risers
Long flat runs of duct are where grease collects. We open access panels along the route and clean each section, recording any that can’t be reached.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that’s where we come in.
For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
SG11 questions
What do I get after the clean?
Every clean comes with a TR19 certificate and a photo report. They belong in the maintenance log, ready for your insurer or an inspection.
What’s the right cleaning interval for a kitchen extract?
Under BESA guidance, the minimum depends on how long you cook each day: 3-monthly for heavy use, 6-monthly for moderate use and 12-monthly for light use. Measured grease levels set the real interval.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes. For anything urgent, such as a fan failure or damage after a fire, ring the 24/7 line, and we’ll advise on what to do next.
What happens to the waste?
It’s contained and taken away. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on, so it does not spread.
What does a TR19 kitchen extract clean include?
All of it, from the canopy through to the discharge. Where there are not enough access panels to reach a section, it’s recorded, and we can fit new ones.
How long does it take to clean a kitchen extract system?
That depends on the size of the system, the amount of grease and the number of access points. Most jobs take a single shift for most kitchens, with long duct runs and tall risers needing more time.
What about areas you cannot get to?
Anything we can’t reach goes on the report, with pictures where possible, and we tell you what would make it reachable, such as extra access panels in ductwork.
