FAQs for Tower Hill

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Tower Hill?

It’s Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Tower Hill. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

Can a school canteen extract in Tower Hill be done out of term time?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. With about 3 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Tower Hill, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Just call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with your term dates and we’ll plan around them.

Are you fully insured?

Yes, we are fully insured. CHAS and SafeContractor accreditation sit alongside it, for sites that check contractor safety.

How often does extract ductwork need cleaning?

It depends mostly on daily cooking hours. Kitchens cooking 12 to 16 hours a day need it at least every 3 months, while lighter use can go longer.

Can you fit access panels in our ductwork?

Yes, we install duct access panels. Panels go where they give the best access to sections that couldn’t be reached, and we will recommend where.

Can you quote from photos?

Yes, if we can see what we need. Otherwise, we book a survey at a time that suits the site, and the quote follows that.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7, for problems that can’t wait. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.

What if part of the duct cannot be reached?

Ductwork needs access to be cleaned. We record those sections on the report and can fit access panels.

About our ductwork cleaning in Tower Hill

We treat ductwork like a doctor treats arteries: diagnose where grease has built up, clear it and confirm the result. Grease readings before and after give you the evidence, alongside before and after photos. The work covers vertical risers, attenuators and multi-storey ducts, and the jobs we see most are duct runs with no cleaning record and thick crusts of old grease along the duct.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.

Every visit ends with a written report and pictures, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Looking after it afterwards

Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Ask us about extra access panels where sections cannot be reached
  • Do not switch the extract off early
  • Tell us if grease leaks from the ductwork
  • Leave a way through to the access panels

After the clean, the same points are tested again, so the report shows the before and after figures. Before and after photos sit next to the numbers.

The less grease gets past the canopy, the cleaner the duct stays. Keep the filters clean, well fitted and in place whenever you cook.

The process

Your trading hours come first. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Once we’re in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the job takes a few hours for a short run, longer for long runs and tall risers. Rural roads and tight entrances are worth telling us about before a visit to Tower Hill.

  1. First the duct route is traced and every access point noted.
  2. Set points along the runs are tested for grease.
  3. Through the access panels, thick grease is removed by hand first.
  4. The duct is degreased with the method that suits the grease, from degreasers to hot water or steam.
  5. Readings and photos are repeated and any section we couldn’t reach is recorded.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
  • Find the previous report, if there is one

How the job changes from site to site

Multi-storey and shared buildings

In a building with several floors, the duct may pass other tenants’ spaces. Access is planned with the building’s managers, so the clean is done safely and quietly.

Access panels

We can fit new access panels where the duct needs them, so the next clean reaches more of the system. The survey shows where they’re needed.

Grease, kitchens and Tower Hill

What we’re called out for in Tower Hill

A greasy duct is a fire path, in Tower Hill as anywhere. Once it lights, fire can spread along the duct and into other areas, which is why the responsible person needs it under control.

Most sites get in touch after spotting something like this:

  • Thick crusts of old grease along the duct
  • A grease test showing the duct is overdue
  • Fat dripping from the ductwork
  • Ductwork that has never been cleaned

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Kings Langley School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

What to look for in a quote

  • How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
  • Proof of insurance
  • Whether VAT is included
  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach

Choosing a duct cleaning contractor

What staff can safely do

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.

What happens if it’s left?

BESA guidance says grease shouldn’t exceed a mean of 200 microns between cleans. Anywhere that reaches 500 microns or more needs immediate spot cleaning. Leaving the duct makes those limits harder to keep to. Somewhere as small as Tower Hill, losing a kitchen or building to a fault is felt by everyone who uses it.

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before work begins.
