About kitchen extract cleaning in West Sussex
Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract systems since 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 and are fully insured. The work covers vertical risers, canopies and hoods and discharge points, and common reasons people get in touch are ductwork thick with old, hardened grease and an overdue clean flagged by an EHO or fire officer.
Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and the same goes into the written report. All told, the work takes anything from a few hours to a full night, depending on the size of the system.
- Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the system and how it’s reached.
- We record grease levels at set points, then fix the price.
- After the kitchen closes, we sheet the area and set up to contain grease and water.
- The treatment: heavy grease scraped out, then every part degreased to TR19® Grease.
- Then the clean bill of health: readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next date.

Around Crawley
Around Crawley, our work takes us to kitchens and buildings near Friary Church of St Francis and St Anthony, St Wilfrid's Catholic School and Tilgate Park and the streets around them. You will also find The George Hotel (less than half a mile north), Three Bridges Junior School (within half a mile south-east) and St Francis of Assisi Catholic Primary School (less than half a mile south-east). Crawley has its own railway station: Crawley station. A little further out are Crawley Hospital (0.5 miles north-west) and County Mall (within half a mile north-east). The countryside around Crawley includes Tilgate Lake.
Where we work in West Sussex
Across West Sussex, from Crawley, Horsham and Worthing outwards, kitchens range from town-centre restaurants and takeaways to pubs, hotels, schools and care homes. Each extract is cleaned to the same TR19® standard, canopy to discharge.
Across London and the South East, we work evenings, overnight and weekends, so sites across West Sussex do not have to lose a day. Coastal kitchens in West Sussex often have their busiest months in the summer, so it pays to book work around the busy season.
Crawley: If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Crawley Hospital about 0.5 miles north-west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. A kitchen near Crawley station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval.
Why act early?
Grease that is left only gets thicker. BESA guidance says the mean should not go above 200 microns between cleans, and 500 microns or more at any point needs immediate spot cleaning. The longer it’s left, the bigger the job becomes.

Aftercare tips
Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it helps at the next visit:
- Keep the cleaning records where you can find them
- Refit filters properly after cleaning
- Keep the baffle filters clean
- Wipe the canopy down at the end of each day
If we couldn’t get into part of the duct, the report says so plainly. A TR19 report should record what wasn’t cleaned as well as what was, and we can fit access panels so it’s reached next time.
Clean the grease filters often, not just on clean day. A filter that’s clean and seated properly stops more grease getting into the plenum, which slows build-up further down the system.
What affects the cost of kitchen extract cleaning
Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We check:
- The condition we find in the survey
- Parking and loading at the site
- A single visit or a regular plan
- The times the site is available
When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before we start.
What to send for a quote
To help us quote quickly, send us:
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
- Wide photos of the system and the area around it
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- Problems your staff have spotted
We do not publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. We look at your system first, from photos or on a visit, and then send you a fixed quote. To get going, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.
Different parts, different methods
Schools, hospitals and care homes
School, hospital and care home kitchens often have fixed hours and long holidays, so cleans can be planned for holidays or quiet times. The certificate and report suit estates and compliance files.
Canopy and plenum
Canopies vary from a single hood to long runs over several appliances, each section is cleaned and photographed before and after.
Multi-site and managed buildings
We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we can quote for the whole system.
Whether it’s one building or many, you get the same standard: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.
West Sussex questions
How much does kitchen extract cleaning cost?
Every site is different, so each gets its own fixed quote. To get one, call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and tell us about the site and its opening hours.
How long does a kitchen extract clean take?
Length of duct, grease levels and access all affect it. Most jobs take a few hours for a small kitchen, longer for a large system.
Will I get a certificate after the clean?
You receive a TR19 certificate and a photo report. The certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal, and the report shows before and after pictures, readings, any areas not reached and the next clean date.
What happens if you can’t reach some of it?
We record them on the report, with pictures where possible, and we explain what access is needed, for example new access panels.
Do I have to clean my extract to TR19 by law?
TR19 is not written into law, but the responsible person still has a legal duty under the Fire Safety Order 2005. Insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to TR19 as the standard, and many policies require it.
Can one contract cover all our sites?
Yes. One number covers all your sites across London and the South East, and visits can be set on a regular cycle.
Is West Sussex in your area?
Yes. Our technicians work in West Sussex, within the South East and London area we cover.
