How kitchen extract cleaning works in PO22

A kitchen extract system is far more than the canopy you can see. Beyond the filters run the plenum, the ducts and risers, the fan and the point where air leaves the building, and each part collects grease. Our clean follows the air from canopy to discharge, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We’re often asked to deal with a kitchen taken over without any extract records and fat running down the canopy edge, on extract fans, vertical risers and discharge points.

Protection comes first: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. The work on site takes one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one, and the area is cleaned down before we leave.

  1. We start with a survey, so we know every part of the system before we quote.
  2. Set points are tested for grease thickness and the quote is fixed before work begins.
  3. Once the kitchen has closed and the equipment has cooled, we sheet and protect the area.
  4. Canopy, plenum, filters, duct runs, risers, fan and discharge are all cleaned to TR19® Grease.
  5. Finally the system is re-tested and photographed, and the certificate and report follow.

What you’ll pay

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you are not sure what’s needed, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

Kitchen extract cleaning across PO22: local notes

Kitchens across PO22 cook for very different hours, from all-day town-centre sites to part-time hall and school kitchens. Grease readings and BESA’s minimum intervals set the schedule for each.

From central London kitchens to coastal hotels and country pubs, London and the South East have every kind of site. Wherever the site is in PO22, the work is done to the same TR19® standard. Near the coast in PO22, salt and damp speed up corrosion in fans, ducts and dampers, and corrosion is one of the things that can stop a fire damper closing.

Middleton-on-Sea: Church and community hall kitchens, near St Nicholas Church or anywhere around Middleton-on-Sea, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital about 2.4 miles west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

Fixed quotes for kitchen extract cleaning in PO22

The diagnosis comes before the price. The main factors are:

  • What state the system is in
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
  • Parking and loading at the site

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.

Helping us quote

Photos let us diagnose from a distance. Try to include:

  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before work begins.

What happens if it’s left?

A clogged extract does not only raise the fire risk. Blocked filters and narrowed ducts slow the airflow, leaving the kitchen hot and smoky and the fan strains to keep up. Grease drips, smells and condensation are common next.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
  • Whether the figure could change on the day
  • Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
  • What hours they’ll be on site

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.

If your staff spot something between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.

Keeping the system healthy

Simple habits between visits make a real difference. Our advice:

  • Do not let the canopy gutters overflow
  • Run the extract fan throughout cooking
  • Keep the baffle filters clean
  • Tell us when the extract starts to drip or smell

The report gives a recommended date for the next clean, based on your cooking hours and the grease we measured. We can put the system on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly plan, so the date is not missed.

Tell whoever looks after the system when something changes. Grease dripping from the canopy, a burning smell or a fan that sounds rough are all signs of build-up, and a grease thickness test can confirm it.

What kitchen extract cleaning can’t fix

Kitchen extract cleaning can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It does not solve:

  • Fat blocking the kitchen drains
  • A damper that sticks or has a damaged link
  • An undersized canopy or fan

Questions from PO22

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. You deal with one contact for every site in our area, and visits can be set on a regular cycle.

Are you accredited for kitchen extract cleaning?

We clean to BESA TR19® Grease as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, with certificates issued through the BESCA portal. Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009.

How much notice should we give?

That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, 24/7. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, with the emergency line covering every other hour.

Do you clean the whole extract system or just the canopy?

Every part the air passes through, as far as access allows. Where there aren’t enough access panels to reach a section, it’s recorded, and we can fit new ones.

Does the law say I must clean to TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19 is the recognised way to show you’ve dealt with extract grease.

Do you cover PO22?

Yes. Our technicians work in PO22, within the South East and London area we cover.
