Kitchen extract cleaning in Goring-by-Sea
Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract systems since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 and are fully insured. The work covers horizontal duct runs, vertical risers and extract fans, and people most often call us about fat running down the canopy edge and cleaning needed before an insurance renewal or survey. Whether you call it kitchen extract cleaning, TR19 cleaning or kitchen duct cleaning, it’s the job we do every week across West Sussex.
What can be cleaned depends on what can be reached. Where a duct run has no panels, we say so on the report and can fit new ones.
In a smaller place like Goring-by-Sea, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.
The paperwork matters as much as the work. Each visit is written up with pictures, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

Why deal with it now?
A clogged extract does not only raise the fire risk. Filters block, airflow drops and the kitchen gets hotter and smokier and the fan strains to keep up. Smells, dripping grease and condensation often follow. In a smaller place like Goring-by-Sea, a site that has to close is felt quickly.
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and the price is agreed before any work starts.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Goring-by-Sea
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept on a regular cycle.

Between visits
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Keep grease collection points emptied
- File each certificate with the fire risk assessment
- Flag any change in how the extract sounds or works
- Refit filters properly after cleaning
After cleaning, we re-test the same points we measured at the start, so you can see the difference in numbers as well as pictures. A TR19 certificate follows, issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.
Tell whoever looks after the system when something changes. Drips, odours and fan noise often mean grease is building, and a grease thickness test can confirm it.
What affects the cost of kitchen extract cleaning
A fixed price needs a few facts first. We check:
- How big the system is
- One-off work versus a regular cycle
- The times the site is available
- Parking and loading at the site
Putting the work off seldom saves money. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re not sure what’s needed, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email for straight advice and a fixed quote.
Helping us quote
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. With your enquiry, please include:
- A few general shots of the system
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
There’s no standard price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from pictures or on a visit, then send a fixed quote. To start, call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.
What happens on the day
A visit follows the same order every time: sheeting and protection first, make the system safe, carry out the kitchen extract cleaning, tidy up and leave you the report. On site, the work takes a single shift for most kitchens, with long duct runs and tall risers needing more time. Tell us when your site near Goring-by-Sea is quiet and the visit will be booked for then.
- First comes a survey of the whole system, by photos or a visit.
- Set points are tested for grease thickness and the quote is fixed before we start.
- On the day, cooking equipment is switched off and left to cool, and everything nearby is sheeted.
- The whole route is cleaned, from the canopy through the ductwork to the fan and the discharge.
- Finally the system is re-tested and photographed, and the certificate and report follow.
Before we arrive
- Find the previous report, if there is one
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
How to get a quote
Every quote begins with a look at the system, either from photos and details you send or from a site visit. After that, you get a fixed price for the work so you know the cost before work begins.
Advice
What a clean will not put right
We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so here are the limits:
- Extraction that cannot cope with the cooking because of its design
- A fan motor that has burnt out
- Faulty fire dampers in the duct
If you’re not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will give you a straight answer.

Grease, kitchens and Goring-by-Sea
The coast is only about 1 mile from Goring-by-Sea. Salt in the air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings, so we check them for corrosion as well as grease. Food Standards Agency records list about 35 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 25 sandwich bars and takeaways within about 1.5 miles of central Goring-by-Sea. Wherever food is cooked under a canopy, the extract above it gathers grease and needs cleaning on a schedule. The fire and rescue service for Goring-by-Sea is West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.
If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Goring-By-Sea CofE (Aided) Primary School or anywhere near Goring-by-Sea, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St Mary's Church or elsewhere in Goring-by-Sea, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; The Acre is the nearest hospital to Goring-by-Sea, about 1.8 miles east.

What your team can do, and what needs us
Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
Goring-by-Sea questions
Is kitchen extract cleaning any different in a coastal place like Goring-by-Sea?
It can, as Goring-by-Sea is within about 1 mile of the sea, where salt in the air is hard on metal. A fan housing that’s rusting near the coast can fail sooner, so it’s worth catching early.
Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Goring-by-Sea?
Food hygiene inspections in Goring-by-Sea are carried out by Worthing council. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.
How much notice do you need?
Book as early as you can for planned work, especially if the next clean or test is due soon. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.
How long does it take to clean a kitchen extract system?
Length of duct, grease levels and access all affect it. As a guide, it takes a few hours for a small kitchen, longer for a large system.
What paperwork comes with a kitchen extract clean?
A TR19 certificate, plus a full photo report. It records what was cleaned, what wasn’t accessible and the recommended next clean date.
Do insurers need proof of extract cleaning?
Grease-filled ducts can carry fire well beyond the kitchen. Many insurers require TR19 cleaning, and may refuse or reduce a claim without proof, so keep every certificate.
When do you clean the extract?
The clean is done when the kitchen is not cooking, working evenings, overnight or at weekends to suit you. Equipment needs to be off and cool before work begins.
