Kitchen extract cleaning in PO20: how it works
Think of it as a health check for the kitchen’s airways: diagnose with a survey, treat with a thorough clean, then sign it off. The sign-off is a TR19 certificate with a photo report, issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. The work covers extract fans, horizontal duct runs and canopies and hoods, and the jobs we see most are missing paperwork after a change of operator and poor airflow at the canopy.
Everything the job needs comes with us, from protective sheeting to tools and access equipment. All we need from you is clear access and the right equipment switched off. The visit takes anything from a few hours to a full night, depending on the size of the system.
- You send pictures or we visit, and the system is surveyed from canopy to discharge.
- Grease thickness is measured and the price is fixed before work starts.
- On the night, the equipment is off and cool and the kitchen is sheeted.
- Filters, canopy and plenum are cleaned, then the ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
- Readings are repeated, pictures taken, and your TR19 certificate and photo report issued.
Pricing in PO20

Get a fixed quote
Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.
Local landmarks in Selsey
Typical jobs here are in premises near The Fisherman's Joy Public House, Seal Primary Academy and St Peter's Church, among other places. Also close by are The Academy (less than half a mile north-west) and The Academy (less than half a mile north-west). Well-known places in the area include Selsey Lifeboat Museum (0.5 miles south-east).
Where we work in PO20
In PO20, we work in places such as Chichester, Selsey and Portfield and well beyond. Every place on our PO20 list (36 in all) is covered, with cleans booked around trading hours.
Across London and the South East, we work evenings, overnight and weekends, so sites in PO20 can keep trading. Coastal kitchens in PO20 often have their busiest months in the summer, so it pays to book work around the busy season.
Selsey: A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St Peter's Church or elsewhere in Selsey, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. School kitchens, at schools like Seal Primary Academy for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.
What affects the quote in PO20
The quote reflects the site in front of us. We consider:
- The number of sites or systems
- Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
- The times the site is available
- How easy every part is to reach
What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why every job is surveyed first, and why the quote is fixed before work begins.
Asking for a quote
A few details help us quote accurately. With your enquiry, please include:
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- Any previous report or certificate
- Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
- Problems your staff have spotted
Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your photos and details or, where that is not enough, a survey on site. After that, you get a fixed price for the work, before work begins.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We’ll take a look and send you a fixed quote.
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.
Multi-site and managed buildings
Managing agents often deal with us directly. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.
Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.
Between visits
To keep the system working properly between visits:
- Keep to the recommended cleaning interval
- Keep the cleaning records where you can find them
- Make sure every filter is fitted before cooking
- Switch the fan on before cooking starts
The report gives a recommended date for the next clean, based on your cooking hours and the grease we measured. We can put the system on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly plan, so the date isn’t missed.
Tell whoever looks after the system when something changes. Grease dripping from the canopy, a burning smell or a fan that sounds rough are all signs of build-up, and a grease thickness test can confirm it.
Why act early?
Grease that is left only gets thicker. Under BESA guidance, grease shouldn’t exceed a mean of 200 microns between cleans, and anywhere reaching 500 microns or more needs a spot clean straight away. Heavy build-up takes longer to remove than regular cleans.
What your quote should include
- Whether they’re fully insured
- If they look at the system before pricing
- Whether they recommend a next date
- Whether a written report and pictures are included
FAQs for PO20
What types of premises do you cover?
Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a single café to a large school. We work with hotels, schools, care homes, offices, retail and leisure sites.
What about areas you can’t get to?
We record them on the report, with photos where possible, and we explain what access is needed, such as extra access panels in ductwork.
What does a TR19 kitchen extract clean include?
The whole system: the canopy, the plenum behind the filters, the filters, horizontal ducts, vertical risers, the fan and the discharge, plus attenuators where fitted. Anything we can’t reach is recorded on the report.
What does TR19 mean?
BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It is not law, but it’s the benchmark.
What information do you need?
Just the basics: where it is, what kind of site, when it’s open and the access. Photos and the last report help too. Then call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.
Are you a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member?
We are members of Vent Hygiene Elite, the scheme run by BESCA, and we clean to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
Strictly, the legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, not from TR19. In practice, TR19 is how kitchens show they’re managing grease, and an insurer may refuse or reduce a claim without it.
