How kitchen extract cleaning works in RH7
Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract systems since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Typical jobs include years of baked-on grease in the ducts and fat running down the canopy edge, on horizontal duct runs, plenums and filters and vertical risers.
We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. Once we are in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the job takes as long as the system needs, from a few hours to several planned visits.
- First the diagnosis: a survey of the whole system and its access points.
- Grease readings set the baseline, and a fixed quote follows.
- We arrive after close, protect the area and contain the waste.
- Heavy deposits are scraped by hand and the system degreased to TR19® Grease.
- Then the clean bill of health: readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next date.
Pricing in RH7
Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before any work starts.

Near you in Lingfield
Typical jobs here are in premises near Church of St Peter and St Paul, Lingfield College and Lingfield Primary School, among other places. You’ll also find Centenary Fields (less than half a mile north) and The Star pub (under half a mile east). Lingfield has its own railway station: Lingfield station. Well-known places in the area include Queen Victoria Hospital (2.9 miles south) and Haxted Watermill Museum (2.2 miles north-east). Not far away are Hedgecourt Lake.
Where we work in RH7
Across RH7, from Lingfield, Dormansland and Blindley Heath outwards, kitchens range from town-centre restaurants and takeaways to pubs, hotels, schools and care homes. Every one gets the same full TR19® clean, from the canopy to the discharge.
Across London and the South East, we work evenings, overnight and weekends, so sites in RH7 can keep trading.
Lingfield: If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Lingfield Primary School or anywhere near Lingfield, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Peter and St Paul or anywhere around Lingfield, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.
Common problems we fix in RH7
Grease filters are the first line of defence, and they’re often the weak point. Filters that are bent, badly fitted, missing or left uncleaned let more fat into the plenum and duct, and it doesn’t stop until it reaches the fan.
Common reasons sites call us include:
- Extraction mentioned at an environmental health visit
- A kitchen taken over without any extract records
- Grease drips onto cooking equipment
- Stale cooking odours from the system
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
Part by part
Extract fan and discharge
Attenuators, where fitted, can soak up grease and need attention. We clean what can be reached and note anything that cannot.
Restaurant and pub kitchens
Losing a service isn’t an option for most restaurants and pubs. We work overnight and at weekends where that suits, and hand back a clean kitchen ready to cook.
Leave it or put it right?
TR19® isn’t law, but the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is. The responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and in a kitchen that means keeping extract grease under control. TR19 is the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to.
What your quote should include
- Whether the quote is based on a survey or pictures
- Proof of accreditation you can verify
- Whether they’re fully insured
- When the next visit should be, and why
Looking after it afterwards
Aftercare is simple, and it helps at the next visit:
- Flag any change in how the extract sounds or works
- Keep grease collection points emptied
- Keep the TR19 certificate and photo report in the maintenance log
- Clean the grease filters regularly between TR19 cleans
The report gives a recommended date for the next clean, set from your daily cooking hours and the readings we took. We can put the system on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly plan, so the date isn’t missed.
Stick to the cleaning interval on the certificate. If the kitchen starts cooking longer hours, the interval should be looked at again, and grease readings will show it.
Questions from RH7
Which parts of the extract do you clean?
Every part the air passes through, as far as access allows. Sections with no access are listed on the report, and extra panels can be fitted.
Can you quote from photos?
Yes, for many jobs. Send a few wide pictures plus close-ups of panels, filters or grilles, and a fixed quote usually follows within one working day. If pictures are not enough, we’ll survey first.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Scheduled maintenance plans are part of what we do, with visits at the interval your system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.
What do you do with what you remove?
We contain it and take it with us. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on, so it does not spread.
When do you clean the extract?
Out of hours: evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. The equipment is switched off and left to cool, and we hand the kitchen back ready for the next service.
What should I send you?
The site address, the type of premises and your opening hours, along with a few pictures and any previous report.
What do you do to protect the area?
We start with protection: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. We tidy up and take our waste away before we leave.
