Our fire damper testing service in the Isle of Wight

The point of testing is to find dampers that fail. Where a blade sticks, a link is damaged or corrosion has set in, we note it and can quote to repair or replace the damper rather than leaving you with a problem and no fix. The work covers riser dampers, hospitals and care homes and wall and floor dampers, and people most often call us about blades that jam part-way when released and dust or grease build-up on damper blades.

We turn up at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool before any work starts, and the area around the work is covered and protected. On site, it takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building.

  1. Before the visit, we agree access, timings and any areas with restrictions.
  2. We open up ceilings and hatches and take off each access panel.
  3. The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
  4. The damper is reset and its condition noted.
  5. We close everything up and send the results in a report.

What you’ll pay

What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why we survey first, from photos or on site, and the price is agreed before we start.

Fire damper testing around the Isle of Wight

Buildings across the Isle of Wight range from large multi-storey sites to small schools and surgeries. The test is the same for every damper: release, check, reset and record.

Across London and the South East, we work evenings, overnight and weekends, so sites across the Isle of Wight don’t have to lose a day. The Isle of Wight includes coastal places, where salt in the air speeds up corrosion of roof-level equipment. Fans and cowls on sea-facing roofs are worth checking at every visit.

Newport: St Mary's Hospital, about 0.8 miles north of Newport, is the kind of building where dampers protect every compartment; smaller care sites need the same annual tests. For schools like Nine Acres Primary School, damper testing is easiest in the holidays, when corridors and ceilings are clear.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Managing agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we will send a fixed quote.

Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too across the Isle of Wight. Work can be phased by floor, building or site around the people who use them.

What fire damper testing cannot fix

Not every problem is solved by fire damper testing, and we will tell you before any work starts. It won’t put right:

  • Fire alarm or control system faults behind a smoke damper
  • Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls
  • Fire risk assessments, which need a fire risk assessor

What we’re called out for in the Isle of Wight

Building work often happens right next to dampers. A cable run through the blade path, a knocked link or a wedged blade is enough to stop a damper closing.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Dampers that can’t be reached without an access panel
  • Dampers that stick or won’t close fully
  • Smoke dampers with no recent test
  • Fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year

Keeping the system healthy

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it helps at the next visit:

  • Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly
  • Update the register when ductwork changes
  • Get remedials done soon after a failed test
  • Keep damper test reports with the fire safety log

Pass the report to whoever keeps your fire risk assessment up to date, so the assessment reflects where the dampers stand. Faults on the report are worth closing off quickly.

Keeping to at least annual testing stops small faults turning into failed dampers. Faults caught early are easier to fix.

What the work involves, part by part

Fusible link fire dampers

A damaged or painted link can stop a damper doing its job. We check its condition during the test and note anything that isn’t right.

Smoke dampers

Testing smoke dampers sometimes needs input from whoever looks after the control system. We plan that with you before the visit.

Questions from the Isle of Wight

How often do fire dampers need drop testing?

BESA’s guidance is a test on installation and at least once a year after that. Some sites choose to test more often where the risk is higher.

How much does fire damper testing cost in the Isle of Wight?

There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: how big it is, what state it’s in, how we reach it and the working hours. We fix the price before any work starts.

Are you accredited?

We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. The law sets the duty; TR19® is the benchmark used to show it’s met. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, the responsible person must reduce fire risk, and without records, many insurers may refuse or reduce a claim.

What happens to dampers you can’t get to?

It’s noted as inaccessible rather than skipped. With an access panel fitted, it can be tested on a return visit.

How long does fire damper testing take?

It takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. How easily we can reach the dampers makes the most difference, so we’ll confirm the time when we quote.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

By covering it before any work starts. The work is kept contained and leave the area clean.
