Kitchen extract cleaning across the Isle of Wight: what to expect
The ducts are where most of the grease hides. Access panels let us into the duct runs and risers, removing thick grease by hand, then using degreasers, hot water or steam to suit the deposit. Anything out of reach is noted in the report and extra access panels can be added. The work covers horizontal duct runs, canopies and hoods and plenums and filters, and the jobs we see most are a TR19 certificate needed for the insurer and extraction mentioned at an environmental health visit.
Everything the job needs comes with us, from protective sheeting to tools and access equipment. You only need to give us clear access and switch off what needs to be off. On site, the work takes a single shift for most kitchens, with long duct runs and tall risers needing more time.
- You send photos or we visit, and the system is surveyed from canopy to discharge.
- We take grease readings at set points and send you a fixed quote.
- On the night, the equipment is off and cool and the kitchen is sheeted.
- Filters, canopy and plenum are cleaned, then the ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
- We re-test, photograph and send your certificate and photo report.
Pricing in the Isle of Wight
When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before work begins.

Near you in Newport
Around Newport, our work takes us to kitchens and buildings near Seaclose Park, Castle Inn and Island Innovation VI Form Campus and the streets around them. Other local landmarks include Christ The King College (0.6 miles south-west) and Nine Acres Primary School (less than half a mile south). Other landmarks nearby include Carisbrooke Castle (1 mile south-west) and St Mary's Hospital (0.8 miles north). Not far away are Briddlesford Nature Reserve and Mill Hill.
Where we work in the Isle of Wight
Across the Isle of Wight, from Newport, Ryde and Cowes outwards, kitchens range from town-centre restaurants and takeaways to pubs, hotels, schools and care homes. Each extract is cleaned to the same TR19® standard, canopy to discharge.
We work across London and the South East, and the Isle of Wight is part of that area. Each job starts with a survey and a fixed quote. In the coastal parts of the Isle of Wight, salt air and damp are hard on ductwork, fans and dampers, and corrosion is one of the things that can stop a fire damper closing.
Newport: If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like St Mary's Hospital about 0.8 miles north, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. Term dates shape school work: for a school like Nine Acres Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we can quote for the whole system.
Whether it’s one building or many, you get the same standard: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.
Aftercare tips
Here’s the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Report grease drips, smells or fan noise right away
- Do not let the canopy gutters overflow
- Refit filters properly after cleaning
- Wipe the canopy down at the end of each day
You get a photo report after every clean. Before and after photos show each part of the system, and lists what was cleaned, any areas we couldn’t reach and the date the next clean is due.
Tell whoever looks after the system when something changes. Grease dripping from the canopy, a burning smell or a fan that sounds rough are all signs of build-up, and a grease thickness test can confirm it.
What your team can do, and what needs us
If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
What the work involves, part by part
Schools, hospitals and care homes
Some healthcare kitchens never fully close. Cleans are planned between meals or overnight with as little disruption as possible.
Extract fan and discharge
The discharge is where air leaves the building, which can collect grease and stain the surface around it. It’s cleaned as far as safe access allows, and any limits are recorded.
What kitchen extract cleaning can’t fix
An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what kitchen extract cleaning will not do:
- Extraction that can’t cope with the cooking because of its design
- A fan motor or bearings that have failed (that needs a fan repair or replacement)
- Fat blocking the kitchen drains
Common questions in the Isle of Wight
What happens to the waste?
Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. None of it is left on site.
How often does a kitchen extract system need cleaning?
That comes down mainly to daily cooking hours. Heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day calls for a clean at least every 3 months under BESA guidance, and lighter use less often. Your report gives a recommended next clean date.
Are you a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member?
We are members of Vent Hygiene Elite, the scheme run by BESCA, and we clean to BESA TR19® Grease. We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 too, and we are fully insured.
How long does it take to clean a kitchen extract system?
Length of duct, grease levels and access all affect it. Most jobs take as long as the system needs, from a few hours to several planned visits.
What does TR19 mean?
A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.
What happens if you can’t reach some of it?
They’re marked on the report. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, which we can install.
Which sectors do you work in?
Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a single café to a large school. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.
