Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Sandown
Plenty of buildings have dampers nobody has looked at since they were fitted. Ceilings get lowered, hatches get boarded over and paperwork goes astray. We find what we can, test what we can reach and list anything we can’t get to, so you know where the gaps are. Typical jobs include dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment and smoke dampers that need testing through their controls, across offices and schools, riser dampers and fusible link fire dampers.
A building in a smaller place like Sandown might have only a few dampers, and each still needs an annual drop test at least, with a record of every result.
Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. So every job comes with a written report and pictures, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

Different parts, different methods
Fusible link fire dampers
Most fire dampers are held open by a fusible link. When the link reaches its set temperature it melts, and the blade drops to close the duct. Testing means dropping the blade, checking the full close and resetting it.
Schools, hospitals and care homes
In hospitals and care homes, people are there day and night. The sequence of testing is agreed with staff so care is not interrupted.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that’s where we come in.
When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We’ll take a look and send you a fixed quote.
Sandown buildings and fire safety
Sea air reaches Sandown, which sits within about 1 mile of the coast. Corrosion is a known cause of damper failure, and coastal air adds to the risk near intakes and louvres. There are about 3 schools, colleges and universities, about 11 hospitals, care homes and childcare premises and about 30 hotels and B&Bs on the FSA’s food hygiene register within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Sandown. Larger buildings like these are often divided into fire compartments, with dampers where ducts pass between them. Fire safety in Sandown falls to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces and other non-domestic buildings, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.
Wherever there are offices above shops, near Sandown station or elsewhere in Sandown, ductwork may cross fire-resisting floors, and any dampers need testing. The nearest hospital, Arthur Webster Memorial Hospital for Children, is about 1.6 miles south-west; healthcare buildings like it are a reminder that dampers protect people who can’t move quickly. If you manage a school site such as The Bay Church of England School, any fire dampers can be tested in the holidays.

Your questions about fire damper testing in Sandown
Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Sandown?
Sandown is in the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. A report listing every damper, its location and its result is the easiest way to show the dampers are maintained.
Do you do school damper testing in Sandown in the summer holidays?
Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. With about 3 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Sandown, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Send us your term dates when you call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email, and we will fit the work in.
Is a quote from pictures possible?
In many cases, yes. With good pictures, the site type and your last report, we can price many jobs. Where we cannot see enough, we arrange a survey.
Which kinds of sites do you work on?
All kinds of commercial and public premises: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. We fit the work around how the site operates.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used, and we’ll suggest a schedule and quote for it.
Do you test smoke dampers as well?
Yes. We test smoke dampers through their control system, as they’re motor driven. Each one is checked for full travel and the result recorded.
Which accreditations do you hold?
Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, alongside BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.
How often do fire dampers need drop testing?
At least once a year, under BESA guidance, plus a test when the damper is first installed. Your fire risk assessment may call for some dampers to be tested more often.
What affects the cost of fire damper testing
A fixed price needs a few facts first. We check:
- Parking and loading at the site
- The times the site is available
- The scale of the work
- The condition of the system
What you pay depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before we start, so you know where you stand.
Helping us quote
To help us quote quickly, please include:
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- Wide photos of the system and the area around it
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
For fire damper testing in Sandown, call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email. Tell us what kind of premises it is and when it’s open, plus pictures or the previous report if they’re to hand. A fixed quote typically follows within one working day.
For landlords and multi-site operators
Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too in Sandown and across the Isle of Wight. Larger estates can be phased building by building around the people who use them.
Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

Leave it or put it right?
A sticking blade caught on an annual test can be a small repair. Years of corrosion and dirt can mean the whole damper needs replacing instead. Systems on quieter sites still build up dirt and wear, just more slowly.
Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re unsure, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos for straight advice and a fixed quote.
Why us?

How it works
There are three stages on the day: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, and the sign-off is a written report with photos. The middle part takes longest, and that takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. A site near Sandown typically has room to park, so the questions are about access to the system and your hours.
- First we check the schedule and the last set of results.
- Each damper is found and checked for access.
- We test fire dampers by dropping them and smoke dampers by operating them through the controls.
- Passes are reset and any failures recorded with the reason.
- The report sets out the results, and we can quote to repair or replace failed dampers.
How to prepare
- Agree a time when the area can be out of use
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
How to get a quote
Getting a quote does not take long. Call or email with a few details and you will normally have a fixed price within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.
