Extract fan repair in the Isle of Wight: how it works
Our engineers handle all sorts of fan faults in the Isle of Wight, from rattling and humming to a fan that has stopped dead. The fault is diagnosed, quoted at a fixed price and put right, or the fan is replaced if repair doesn’t make sense. Typical jobs include a worn or slipping fan belt and a dead fan motor, across belts and pulleys, roof and wall fans and kitchen extract fans.
Our technicians bring everything the work needs, from protective sheeting to tools and access equipment. You only need to give us clear access and switch off what needs to be off. The visit takes part of a day for most faults, with a return visit if parts have to be ordered.
- You describe the fault and we arrange a visit.
- On site, the fan is safely isolated.
- The fan and its controls are checked to pin down the fault.
- You get a fixed price for putting it right.
- The work is done and the fan is tested running.
What affects the price in the Isle of Wight
What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and the price is agreed before we start.

Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Where we work in the Isle of Wight
Our extract fan repair work across the Isle of Wight takes in places such as Newport, Ryde and Cowes and well beyond. We cover every place we list for the Isle of Wight, 125 in all, around the clock for emergencies.
Across England, including the Isle of Wight, the responsible person has a legal duty to assess and reduce fire risk, and each certificate and photo report is a record you can keep in your log book. Parts of the Isle of Wight are on or near the coast, where salt air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings. We look for corrosion as well as dirt on coastal sites.
Newport: For kitchens in and around Newport, our emergency line runs 24/7. If you manage a school such as Nine Acres Primary School and the kitchen fan is getting louder, the next break is the time to deal with it.
What the work involves, part by part
Roof and wall-mounted fans
Fans are often mounted on roofs or external walls. How easy the fan is to reach shapes the job, so we ask about it early.
Belt-driven fans
Belt drives have more moving parts than direct-drive fans. More parts to inspect, but many faults are straightforward to fix.
What your team can do, and what needs us
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.
Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
When something else is needed
An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what this work cannot put right:
- Gas interlock faults that a Gas Safe registered engineer must deal with
- Faults in the building’s electrical supply, which need an electrician
- A greasy canopy and duct that a fan repair will not touch
Between visits
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Book regular TR19 cleaning, which includes the fan
- Don’t cook with gaps in the filter bank
- Tell us about a new rattle or whine right away
- Clean or change filters on schedule
If the fan had grease on it, the rest of the system almost certainly does too. We can book a TR19® clean of the whole extract and you get a TR19 certificate and photo report afterwards.
Noise is usually the first sign of a fan problem. Booking a check at this stage keeps it a planned job rather than an emergency during service.
What we are called out for in the Isle of Wight
Fixings and anti-vibration mounts work loose or perish over time. The fan’s movement then travels into the ductwork and structure and that’s a common source of rattles.
What we are most often called out for:
- Weak extraction and a smoky kitchen
- An extract fan that has stopped working
- A humming noise from the fan motor
- A fan worn beyond sensible repair
Common questions in the Isle of Wight
Does the report say when we need you again?
Yes. How often depends on use and condition, and we explain the reasoning on the report.
What should go in our maintenance log?
Each report and certificate we give you, kept together in your maintenance log, along with your own cleaning log. BESA says certificates should show the date, location and technician.
Can you set up regular visits?
Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, to suit the system and how it’s used.
How long will the fan be out of action?
Most fan jobs take a few hours for most repairs, longer for a full fan replacement including running the fan afterwards. We will fit it around the kitchen’s hours where possible.
Can you look after several sites?
Yes. You deal with one contact for every site in our area, with visits on a regular schedule.
Do you work in the Isle of Wight?
Yes. The Isle of Wight is part of the area we cover, as part of our area across London and the South East.
What happens if you can’t reach some of it?
They’re marked on the report. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, and we can fit those.
