About our fire damper testing in Totland
We’re often asked to take on annual damper testing by the people who look after buildings in and around Totland. Send us the damper schedule or the drawings if you have them, and we will plan the testing around when the building is in use. We are often asked to deal with fire dampers that fail to drop shut and fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year, across fusible link fire dampers, motorised smoke dampers and hospitals and care homes.
In a smaller place like Totland, buildings with fire dampers are more likely to be a school, a surgery, a care home or a hotel than an office block. The duty to keep them working is the same as in a city.
We’ve been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

Fire damper testing in Totland: local notes
Totland lies within about 1 mile of the sea. A damper that has corroded can stay open when it should close, which is why coastal sites are worth testing carefully. Food Standards Agency records list about 10 care, childcare and hospital premises and about 4 hotels and guest houses registered as food businesses across Totland and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Many buildings of this kind have ductwork through fire-resisting walls and floors, and the dampers at those points need testing at least annually. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service covers Totland. Under the Fire Safety Order, the responsible person has to keep fire safety systems, dampers included, in working order, and the fire authority enforces that in most non-domestic premises.
Around Totland, as anywhere, each damper is released, checked, reset and recorded.

What else we do in Totland
What affects the cost of fire damper testing
We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:
- Travel, parking and unloading
- The number of sites or systems
- Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
- How big the system is
What you pay depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before we start, so you know where you stand.
Helping us quote
When you call or email, these details help:
- Problems your staff have spotted
- The postcode and the type of business
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
- A few general shots of the system
To help us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, a few photos and any previous report or certificate. Once you have those, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.
How the job changes from site to site
Fusible link fire dampers
The common fire damper uses a link that holds the blade open. When the link reaches its set temperature it melts, and the blade drops to close the duct. We release the blade, check it closes fully and reset it.
Offices and retail
Multi-let buildings may have dampers inside tenant areas. We agree access with the managing agent before the visit.
Managing agents and facilities teams in Totland
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.
Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we can quote for the whole system.
Questions from Totland
Does being near the coast affect fire damper testing in Totland?
It can. Totland is within about 1 mile of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion. We pay particular attention to dampers near louvres and intakes, where salt air reaches.
Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Totland?
Totland is in the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. If a fire safety officer audits the building, they may ask for the latest damper test records.
Does the law say we must follow TR19?
No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005: the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19® is the benchmark for showing that grease in the extract is under control.
Do we lose a day’s trading?
Not usually. Booking the work out of hours means the site can carry on as normal. Bigger sites can be done in stages to keep things running.
Where does the waste go?
Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, including grease, debris and dirty water. We do not leave it behind.
What if a damper has no access panel?
We do not leave it off the report; we note it as not reached. Once there’s a panel or a way through the ceiling, it can be tested.
What information do you need?
The site address, the type of premises and your opening hours, plus pictures of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.
Do you offer emergency callouts?
Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for anything that can’t wait until a planned visit. Ring any time and tell us what’s happened.
What happens on the day
We start by comparing what we find with the survey or your pictures. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. From there, it takes from an hour or two in a small building to several visits on a large estate. We plan the journey to Totland and bring what the job is likely to need.
- We start with whatever records exist: registers, drawings or old reports.
- Dampers are located one by one and reached through their access panels.
- Every fire damper is dropped, and every smoke damper is tested through its controls.
- Each one that passes is reset, ready to work.
- You get a report listing each damper, its result and any remedials needed.
Getting ready for the visit
- Clear loose items from the work area
- Let us know about parking and loading
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
How to get a quote
We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from photos or on a visit, then send a fixed quote. To get going, call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
Common problems we fix in Totland
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has a duty to keep fire safety measures working, and dampers are part of those measures. Whoever that is, whether employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent, needs to be able to show the dampers work.
Keep an eye out for any of the following:
- Dirty dampers that may not close
- Rusted damper blades and springs
- Fire dampers nobody can get to
- Dampers overdue for their annual drop test
School buildings such as St Saviour's Catholic Primary School are usually tested in the holidays, wherever they have dampers.
Questions to ask before you book
- If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate
- Proof of insurance
- Whether the quote is based on a survey or photos
- Whether VAT is included
Aftercare tips
Results last longer with the right care. We suggest:
- Make sure access panels stay clear and usable
- Do not let anything obstruct a damper’s blade
- Store test records alongside the fire risk assessment
- Report leaks or condensation near ductwork quickly
The next test should be no more than a year away. BESA guidance is at least annual testing, and booking the same month each year keeps it simple.
Clean ductwork means less dust and grease reaching the dampers. It makes sense to plan duct cleaning and damper testing together.
