Fire damper testing across Afton

Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Afton

A drop test is simple in principle: the blade is released, checked for a full close and reset. We test dampers for sites in Afton and the rest of the Isle of Wight, logging each one so the record builds year on year. We are often asked to deal with blades that jam part-way when released and corroded dampers in damp risers and plant rooms, across motorised smoke dampers, fusible link fire dampers and offices and schools.

In rural areas, conversions, country hotels and care homes can have ductwork crossing fire-resisting walls, and the dampers in them are easily forgotten. A first test typically starts with finding them all.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

Your questions about fire damper testing in Afton

Is Afton within the area you cover?

Yes, Afton is part of our area, however small the site. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

Can a school’s dampers in Afton be tested out of term time?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. Food Standards Agency records list about 2 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Afton. Just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos with your term dates and we will plan around them.

What’s TR19?

A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark.

Do we lose a day’s trading?

Not usually. Booking the work out of hours means the site can carry on as normal. Bigger sites can be done in stages so parts stay in use.

How often should fire dampers be tested?

At least once a year, under BESA guidance, plus a test when the damper is first installed. Your fire risk assessment may call for some dampers to be tested more often.

What if a fire damper will not close?

The fault is recorded and explained in the report. We can then repair or replace the damper as a remedial job with a fresh test at the end.

Whose job is it to make sure fire dampers are tested?

It’s the responsible person, under the Fire Safety Order 2005. Annual testing by a competent person, with written records, is a practical way to show the duty is being met.

Can you test out of hours?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and weekends, so offices, shops and schools can carry on as normal. We plan the visit around when the building is quietest.

Leave it or put it right?

An untested damper is an unknown. A test gives you a clear answer, and we can offer remedials for any that fail, which is far easier to plan for. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll explain each part.

When something else is needed

We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so here are the limits:

  • Fire-stopping gaps around the duct where it passes through the wall
  • Signing off a building’s overall fire safety
  • Missing dampers that a designer needs to specify

Not sure which it is? You can call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will tell you honestly.

How the visit works

Our technicians bring everything the work needs, from protective sheeting to tools and access equipment. You only need to give us clear access and switch off what needs to be off. On site, the work takes from an hour or two in a small building to several visits on a large estate. Somewhere like Afton, lanes, gates and parking are worth mentioning in advance.

  1. We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
  2. We open up ceilings and hatches and take off each access panel.
  3. We release each blade and check it shuts all the way.
  4. The damper is reset and its condition noted.
  5. We close everything up and send the results in a report.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down

Keeping the system healthy

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:

  • Don’t let anything obstruct a damper’s blade
  • Keep the damper register up to date after any building work
  • Act on failed dampers rather than leaving them on file
  • Warn anyone working in ceiling voids about the dampers

If we couldn’t get to a damper, the report says so and why, such as no access panel or a blocked hatch. Access panels can be fitted so those dampers are tested on the next visit.

Keep a damper register: location, type, last test date and result. It means nothing gets forgotten when staff or contractors change.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit ends with a dated report and pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too across the Isle of Wight. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.

A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.

What fire damper testing looks like in Afton

Afton is within about 1 mile of the coast. Dampers close to louvres and air intakes can corrode in sea air, and a corroded blade may not drop. The FSA’s food hygiene register lists about 5 care, childcare and hospital premises with registered kitchens or food service in and around Afton, up to about a mile and a half out. Many buildings of this kind have ductwork through fire-resisting walls and floors, and the dampers at those points need testing at least annually. Fire safety in Afton falls to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. When a fire safety officer audits a non-domestic building, maintenance of systems like dampers can come up.

School buildings such as All Saints Church of England Primary School are usually tested in the holidays, wherever they have dampers. Historic houses near Afton, with Mottistone Manor about 3.9 miles south-east, are a reminder that older buildings can hold dampers in unexpected places.

Each new fit-out brings a risk of damaged or covered dampers. Testing after a fit-out shows whether anything was disturbed.

Schools are often easiest to test during the holidays, with no classes to work around.
