Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Newport
We are often asked to take on annual damper testing by the people who look after buildings in and around Newport. Send us the damper schedule or the drawings if you have them, and we will plan the visit around the building’s hours. The work covers offices and schools, hospitals and care homes and riser dampers, and the jobs we see most are dampers hidden with no access panel or hatch and dampers overdue for their annual drop test.
Many buildings in a town like Newport have only a few dampers, but each one can seize if it’s never tested. Dust, grease and corrosion are the usual reasons a blade won’t drop.
A written report with pictures follows each visit, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

What fire damper testing looks like in Newport
Food Standards Agency records list about 18 schools, colleges and universities, about 16 care, childcare and hospital premises and about 6 hotels and guest houses registered as food businesses in Newport and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Many buildings of this kind have ductwork through fire-resisting walls and floors, and the dampers at those points need testing at least annually. Newport sits within the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and keeping dampers working is part of the responsible person’s duty. About 0.8 miles north of Newport is St Mary's Hospital, the nearest hospital. A hospital is the kind of building where dampers sit on every floor, and clinics, surgeries and care homes need the same annual testing for any they have.
If you manage a school site such as Nine Acres Primary School, any fire dampers can be tested in the holidays. Hospitals such as St Mary's Hospital, about 0.8 miles north, are a good example of buildings with dampers on many floors; if you manage a clinic, surgery or care home near Newport, the same annual testing applies.

Newport: your questions answered
Can a school’s dampers in Newport be tested out of term time?
Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. With about 18 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Newport, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Just phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with your term dates and we’ll plan around them.
Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Newport?
That’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Keep each damper test report with the fire risk assessment and the building’s log book, ready to show.
Who has the legal duty for fire safety?
In the words of the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person. That’s generally the employer or the person in control of the premises, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. If you’re not sure, check your lease and fire risk assessment.
How far ahead should we book?
The more notice, the better, especially for out-of-hours work. We normally quote within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.
Are you fully insured?
Yes. We carry full insurance and have been trading since 2009.
What happens to dampers you cannot get to?
It’s noted as inaccessible rather than skipped. Once there’s a panel or a way through the ceiling, it can be tested.
Can you quote from photos?
Yes, where the pictures show enough. Otherwise, we book a survey at a time that suits the site, and the quote follows that.
Do you work with multi-site operators?
Yes. One number covers all your sites across London and the South East, and visits can be set on a regular cycle.
What affects the quote in Newport
The price is fixed before any work begins. It’s based on:
- How many systems or sites are involved
- How easy every part is to reach
- The condition of the system
- The size of the system
One small site or a whole estate, we price it on the same basis: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. The price is fixed before we start.
What we need to know
Before you ask for a quote, gather:
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
- The site address and the type of premises
Here’s what helps us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, a few pictures and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Once you have those, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.
When something else is needed
Fire damper testing cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not put right:
- Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls
- Ductwork crossing a fire wall with no damper fitted
- Deciding where dampers should be fitted
Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.
What the work covers
- Wall and floor dampers
- Motorised smoke dampers
- Hospitals and care homes
- Riser dampers
- Offices and schools
- Fusible link fire dampers
The process
Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and it goes on the report too. The visit takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. We arrive in Newport once you’ve closed and leave the site ready for the morning.
- Before the visit, we agree access, timings and any areas with restrictions.
- Ceiling tiles and hatches are opened and each damper’s access panel removed.
- We release each blade and check it shuts all the way.
- We reset it and record any dirt, corrosion or damage.
- We close everything up and send the results in a report.
Preparing for the visit
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
- Move anything stored near the system
- Agree a time when the area can be out of use
Get a fixed quote
Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your photos and details or, where that is not enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price so you know the cost before work begins.
Advice

Common problems we fix in Newport
Dust settles on damper blades, runners and springs over the years. If the duct carries cooking vapour, a film of grease adds to it, and either one can hold the blade part-open.
It’s time to book a visit if you see:
- Fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year
- Fire damper items raised by an assessor
- Missing or out-of-date damper records
- Dirty dampers that may not close
Historic buildings that have had ventilation added later can hide dampers in awkward places; Carisbrooke Castle, about 1 mile south-west, is one of the historic houses in the area around Newport.

For landlords and multi-site operators
When the building owner and the occupier are different, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.
Managing agents often deal with us directly. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we will send a fixed quote.
Part by part
Schools, hospitals and care homes
Buildings where people sleep or need help to leave rely heavily on compartments holding fire back. Regular damper testing supports that.
Access panels
Access panels sometimes get painted over, screwed shut or hidden by new ceilings. Clear access makes the test quicker and less disruptive.
What staff can safely do
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
