Fire damper testing for sites in Ashey

Fire damper testing in Ashey

The idea behind drop testing is straightforward: we release the blade, watch it close fully, then reset it. We test dampers for sites in Ashey and the rest of the Isle of Wight, logging each one so the record builds year on year. Typical jobs include dampers that stick or won’t close fully and fire dampers with no recent test record, on wall and floor dampers, fusible link fire dampers and hospitals and care homes.

For a building in or near Ashey, the visit is planned ahead, with access agreed in advance, and the test itself is the same as in any city building.

Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. That’s why every job is written up in a report with photos, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

Why deal with it now?

Your fire risk assessor or insurer may want evidence that dampers have been tested. A current report on file means you can answer right away when the question comes. Rural sites cannot always move to another kitchen or room when something fails.

Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before work begins.

What happens on the day

We are used to working while the site is closed. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. A quick note on how to find the site and where to park makes a visit to Ashey run smoothly.

  1. First we look at any damper register, drawings or earlier test reports.
  2. We find every damper and open it up through the access panel.
  3. Fire dampers are drop tested and smoke dampers are run through their controls.
  4. Each one that passes is reset, ready to work.
  5. We report on every damper, with faults and suggested remedials set out.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the space around the work
  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids

Ask for a quote

We do not publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. Instead, we look at your site first, from pictures or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To start, ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

Advice

What affects the quote in Ashey

The quote reflects the site in front of us. We consider:

  • The size of the system
  • How easy every part is to reach
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • The condition of the system

No two sites are the same, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

Asking for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks

Want a quote for fire damper testing? Please ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us about the site. We’ll talk you through the work and send you a fixed quote before you commit to anything.

For landlords and multi-site operators

If you look after several sites, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.

Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.

What fire damper testing cannot fix

Fire damper testing cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It does not solve:

  • Fire risk assessments, which need a fire risk assessor
  • Control wiring problems outside the damper itself
  • Approving the building’s fire strategy

Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will tell you honestly.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Riser dampers
  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Offices and schools

Part by part

Fusible link fire dampers

The common fire damper uses a link that holds the blade open. When the link reaches its set temperature it melts, and the blade drops to close the duct. Testing means dropping the blade, checking the full close and resetting it.

Smoke dampers

Testing smoke dampers sometimes needs input from whoever looks after the control system. We agree the arrangements with you in advance.

Ashey questions

Can you get to a site in Ashey?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Ashey included. A survey first, from pictures or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Ashey?

It’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Ashey. If a fire safety officer audits the building, they may ask for the latest damper test records.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. One number covers all your sites in our area, and visits can be set on a regular cycle.

Which sectors do you work in?

Restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools and colleges, hospitals and care homes, offices and retail, as well as food production and leisure sites.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.

How much does fire damper testing cost?

It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. For a quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with the site type, opening hours and a few pictures.

Can testing be done without disrupting the building?

Yes. Testing can be booked outside working hours, which suits offices, retail and schools. Hospitals and care homes are planned with the site team.

What about areas you can’t get to?

Anything we can’t reach goes on the report, with a note of where it is, and we tell you what would make it reachable, such as extra access panels in ductwork.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.

Fire damper testing around Ashey

Ashey lies within about 3 miles of the sea. Salt air speeds up corrosion, and corrosion is one of the things that can stop a fire damper closing. About 4.4 miles south of Ashey is Arthur Webster Memorial Hospital for Children, the nearest hospital. Smaller healthcare sites, from surgeries to care homes, need the same annual damper test as a hospital. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service covers Ashey. Its fire safety officers enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic buildings, and that covers fire safety systems such as dampers.

The nearest hospital, Arthur Webster Memorial Hospital for Children, is about 4.4 miles south; healthcare buildings like it are a reminder that dampers protect people who cannot move quickly. If you manage an older building converted to a hotel or venue, like many historic houses in the area (Nunwell House is about 1.5 miles south-east), finding every damper is the first job. School buildings such as Ryde Academy are usually tested in the holidays, wherever they have dampers.

Ashey is about 2 miles south-west of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. Whatever kind of site you run in Ashey, fire damper testing is something we can help with. We can work out of hours so the site keeps running. Across the Isle of Wight, we cover 125 places, and Ashey is one of them. Our Portsmouth page covers sites nearby, about 9 miles away.

Work in PO33 follows the same survey, fixed quote and written report as everywhere else we cover. We also cover the places around Ashey: Adgestone (2 miles south-east), Brading (2 miles south-east), Morton (2 miles south-east), Alverstone Garden Village (2 miles south) and Yarbridge (2 miles south-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Newport (5 miles west), Cowes (7 miles north-west), Sandown (3 miles south), Shanklin (5 miles south), Ventnor (7 miles south) and East Cowes (6 miles north-west). Island and remote sites take a little more planning, so tell us where you are when you ask for a quote for fire damper testing.
