Fire damper testing in Chale
Smoke dampers work differently from fire dampers. Smoke dampers are motorised and are opened and closed by a control system, so testing means running them through their controls and confirming every blade travels fully and comes back. The work covers motorised smoke dampers, riser dampers and fusible link fire dampers, and the jobs we see most are fire dampers that fail to drop shut and fire dampers with no recent test record.
Testing in a small place like Chale is planned around the journey and access, and the test itself is the same as in any city building.
Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

What fire damper testing looks like in Chale
The coast is only about 1 mile from Chale. Corrosion is a known cause of damper failure, and coastal air adds to the risk near intakes and louvres. About 5.2 miles north of Chale is Whitecroft Hospital, the nearest hospital. Smaller healthcare sites, from surgeries to care homes, need the same annual damper test as a hospital. Chale sits within the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and keeping dampers working is part of the responsible person’s duty.
Healthcare buildings such as Whitecroft Hospital (about 5.2 miles north) rely on fire compartments, and the dampers in them need testing at least annually.
Chale is about 7 miles south of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. Chale gets the same approach as every site we work on: diagnosis first, a fixed price, out-of-hours working where necessary and a written report with photos. Chale is one of 125 towns, villages and districts in the Isle of Wight we cover for fire damper testing. Portsmouth is in our area too, around 18 miles away.
Work in PO38 follows the same survey, fixed quote and written report as everywhere else we cover. Whether your site is on Church Place, Upper House Lane and Blythe Shute or a nearby road, our technicians can take on the work. Nearby, we also carry out fire damper testing in Blackgang (1 mile south-east), Pyle (1 mile north-west), Chale Green (1 mile north), Atherfield Green (1 mile north-west) and Niton (2 miles south-east). Further out, we also cover Newport (7 miles north), Ryde (11 miles north-east), Cowes (11 miles north), Sandown (8 miles north-east), Shanklin (7 miles east) and Ventnor (5 miles east). If your site is somewhere remote, a little more planning is needed, so mention it when you ask for a quote.

What fire damper testing cannot fix
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- Dampers that were never installed where they’re needed
- Signing off a building’s overall fire safety
- Faults in the alarm or building controls that signal smoke dampers
Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll tell you honestly.
Where we work

For landlords and multi-site operators
When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We can quote either party and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.
If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and pictures, so records stay tidy.
What your team can do, and what needs us
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
If your staff spot something between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We will take a look and give you a fixed quote.
How it works
Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. For a village or hamlet like Chale, tell us about narrow lanes, gates and parking when you book.
- We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
- We open up ceilings and hatches and take off each access panel.
- The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
- We reset it and record any dirt, corrosion or damage.
- Panels and tiles go back, and the results are written up.
How to prepare
- Move anything stored near the system
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
- Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system

Looking after it afterwards
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:
- Warn anyone working in ceiling voids about the dampers
- Keep an eye out for damp around dampers
- Do not let anything obstruct a damper’s blade
- Close off damper faults promptly
Share the results with your fire risk assessor, so the assessment reflects where the dampers stand. Faults on the report are worth closing off quickly.
A simple register of every damper helps a great deal: location, type, last test date and result. It means nothing gets forgotten when staff or contractors change.

Your questions about fire damper testing in Chale
Which fire authority looks after Chale?
It’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Chale. Keep each damper test report with the fire risk assessment and the building’s log book, ready to show.
Can you come to Chale after we close?
Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. The work in Chale can fit around your hours. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.
What’s TR19?
TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
Whose job is it to make sure fire dampers are tested?
It’s the responsible person, under the Fire Safety Order 2005. Annual testing by a competent person, with written records, is a practical way to show the duty is being met.
Does the law say we must follow TR19?
No, not in itself. Insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to TR19® as the benchmark, and many insurers ask for proof of cleaning to it. The law behind it is the Fire Safety Order 2005 in England and Wales.
How much notice do you need?
It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.
What do you do with what you remove?
It leaves the site with us when we go. During the work, it’s contained so the area stays clean.
How long does fire damper testing take?
Testing takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. Bigger sites can be phased, so ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email for a quote.
What the work involves, part by part
Fusible link fire dampers
For dampers closed by a spring, BESA guidance is annual testing as a minimum. A weak spring or a sticking blade shows up when the damper is dropped.
Smoke dampers
Because they’re linked to controls, smoke damper tests can need some coordination. We agree the arrangements with you in advance.
Do you need fire damper testing in Chale?
Over time, dust builds up on the blade, the runners and the spring. If the duct carries cooking vapour, a film of grease adds to it, and either one can hold the blade part-open.
The symptoms we are asked about most are:
- Gaps in the fire damper test log
- Dampers that can’t be reached without an access panel
- Dirty dampers that may not close
- Damper actions from a fire risk assessment
Wolverton Manor, about 3.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses near Chale, and older buildings converted to new uses often have ventilation added later.
What your quote should include
