How canopy cleaning works in the Isle of Wight
The canopy is where the extract system breathes in. A dirty canopy passes more grease further into the system. Our diagnosis starts there, and the treatment is a thorough degrease of the hood, plenum and housing. Common call-outs are for a filter housing caked in grease and a hood coated in old grease, on grease gutters, island canopies and plenum chambers.
We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. Once we’re in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the work takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several.
- First the canopy is surveyed, by photos or in person.
- The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
- With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
- We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
- We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Kitchen extracts across the Isle of Wight
Our canopy cleaning work across the Isle of Wight takes in places such as Newport, Ryde and Cowes and the villages in between. We cover every place we list for the Isle of Wight, 125 in all, and kitchens are cleaned around their opening hours, overnight and at weekends included.
We work across London and the South East, and the Isle of Wight is part of that area. Every job is surveyed first and quoted at a fixed price, wherever it is in the Isle of Wight. Along the coast in the Isle of Wight, many hotels, pubs and cafés are at their busiest in the summer, so it pays to book work around the busy season.
Newport: School kitchens, at schools like Nine Acres Primary School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like St Mary's Hospital about 0.8 miles north, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.
Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Between visits
Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Empty the grease troughs before they fill
- Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
- Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
- Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
The report gives a recommended next clean date. That date is based on your cooking hours and what we found, in line with BESA guidance.
Run the extract for as long as anything is cooking. Air that keeps moving carries less grease onto the canopy.
Why deal with it now?
In the Isle of Wight, as elsewhere, a greasy canopy is one of the first things an inspector sees. A clean hood is a sign the kitchen is cared for, and it’s far easier to keep clean than to rescue.
What your quote should include
- Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
- How areas they can’t reach will be recorded
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- If they look at the system before pricing
How we price canopy cleaning
Every site gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:
- Working hours and out-of-hours timing
- Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
- Parking and loading at the site
- The scale of the work
Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.
What to send for a quote
You do not need the technical terms. Just send:
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
- Problems your staff have spotted
- Your last certificate, test record or report
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
Getting a quote doesn’t take long. Call or email with a few details and you will normally have a fixed price within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.
Why it fails
Moisture in the air mixes with the grease on the canopy. Water vapour condenses on the cooler canopy surfaces and drips, carrying grease with it. The result is sticky streaks and drips onto the range.
Clients normally contact us after spotting one of these:
- A plenum thick with grease behind the filters
- Grease dripping from the canopy edge
- A hood coated in old grease
- An EHO comment about the canopy
Questions from the Isle of Wight
Do you clean the grease filters as part of a canopy clean?
Filters are removed so we can clean the plenum and housing, then cleaned and refitted. Between cleans, a filter exchange service can keep them in good order.
What causes grease to drip from the hood?
Most drips come from overflowing troughs, damaged filters or a plenum thick with grease. We clean all three and point out anything that’s causing it.
Do we need to close the kitchen for a canopy clean?
Only while we are working, and we work out of hours, so most kitchens do not lose a service. We work evenings, nights and weekends.
Do you provide photos of the cleaned canopy?
A photo report shows the canopy and plenum before and after. Full system cleans also come with a TR19 certificate.
Which canopies and hoods do you clean?
Single hoods, long wall canopies and island canopies alike. The survey tells us how best to clean yours, from pictures or a visit.
Who has the legal duty for fire safety?
The law calls them the responsible person. That is generally the employer or the person in control of the premises, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. Your lease and fire risk assessment should make it clear.
What do you do to protect the area?
We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before any work starts, and anything we remove is contained. At the end, the area is cleaned down.
