Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in East Cowes

The idea behind drop testing is straightforward: we release the blade, watch it close fully, then reset it. We do this for buildings in East Cowes and across the Isle of Wight, logging each one so the record builds year on year. If you have dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment and dust or grease build-up on damper blades, we can put it right, from offices and schools, wall and floor dampers and fusible link fire dampers onwards.

Where there are care homes, schools or hotels around a place like East Cowes, their dampers are often in the ductwork serving kitchens, plant rooms and corridors. Testing is planned around residents, pupils or guests.

We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we have been trading since 2009.

Size, condition, access and working hours all affect the cost. Ask us for a fixed quote and we’ll usually reply within one working day.

Are you accredited?

We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, alongside BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. The law sets the duty; TR19® is the benchmark used to show it’s met. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, the responsible person must reduce fire risk, and without records, many insurers may refuse or reduce a claim.

East Cowes lies within about 1 mile of the sea. Salt air speeds up corrosion, and corrosion is one of the things that can stop a fire damper closing. Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

From a single site to a large estate, the standard is the same: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.

When to call us in East Cowes

Over the life of a building, owners, tenants and contractors come and go, and the damper records do not always go with them. With no register, it’s hard to say how many dampers exist, let alone when they were tested.

These are the problems we see most often:

  • Buildings with no damper register
  • Rusted damper blades and springs
  • Dust or grease build-up on damper blades
  • Blades that jam part-way when released

If you manage an older building converted to a hotel or venue, like many historic houses in the area (Osborne House is about 0.6 miles east), finding every damper is the first job.

What your quote should include

  • Proof of insurance
  • Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
  • Whether the quote shows VAT
  • What paperwork you get at the end

Our hiring checklist

Why it’s worth doing now in East Cowes

A damper that’s stuck open gives fire and smoke a route straight through a fire-resisting wall. Everything else about the compartment can be right and the duct still lets it down. Testing now is how you find out before it matters. You choose the date of a planned visit, and a breakdown never asks.

We don’t list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. Call for a fixed quote, and we will talk you through it.

The process

A visit follows the same order every time: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, carry out the fire damper testing, clear away and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. Because the survey comes first, a visit to East Cowes can normally be finished without a second trip.

  1. First we look at any damper register, drawings or earlier test reports.
  2. We find every damper and open it up through the access panel.
  3. We release each fire damper blade and operate smoke dampers from their controls.
  4. We reset every damper that passes and check it’s left open.
  5. You get a report listing each damper, its result and any remedials needed.

Preparing for the visit

Advice

What affects the cost of fire damper testing

We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:

  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • The number of sites or systems
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • How easy every part is to reach

One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. The price is fixed before any work starts.

What to send for a quote

When you contact us, these details help:

  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • A few general shots of the system
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles

Quotes are quick. Send a few details and pictures, and we typically reply with a fixed quote within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Keeping the system healthy

So the system stays in good health:

  • Get remedials done soon after a failed test
  • Tell contractors where dampers are before they start work
  • Book the next test before the year runs out
  • Keep damper test reports with the fire safety log

Dampers we couldn’t reach are listed with the reason, for example a missing panel or a covered hatch. Access panels can be fitted so those dampers are tested on the next visit.

Keeping to at least annual testing stops small faults turning into failed dampers. A blade that’s just starting to stick is easier to deal with than a seized one.
