About our canopy cleaning in Bonchurch
Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you have a plenum thick with grease behind the filters and poor capture at the hood, we can help, from grease gutters, island canopies and wall canopies onwards.
Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.
Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

Common questions in Bonchurch
Does the sea air around Bonchurch make a difference to canopy cleaning?
It can. Bonchurch is within about 1 mile of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion. A fan housing that is rusting near the coast can fail sooner, so it’s worth catching early.
Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Bonchurch during the holidays?
Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. With about 2 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Bonchurch, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.
How long is a canopy clean?
One lightly soiled hood doesn’t take long, but large or heavily soiled canopies take longer. You’ll know before we start.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes. For anything urgent, such as a fan failure or damage after a fire, ring the 24/7 line, and we’ll advise on what to do next.
Is canopy cleaning enough for TR19?
A TR19® Grease clean covers the whole system, not just the canopy. A canopy clean helps between full cleans, but the ducts and fan still need doing, and the report will say what was covered.
What happens to the waste?
Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, including grease, debris and dirty water. None of it is left on site.
What accreditations do you have?
We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we’re fully insured.
Do we need to close while you work?
Not typically. Visits are timed for when the area is closed, such as overnight or at a weekend, so the site can carry on as normal.
What happens if it’s left?
A greasy canopy is fuel directly above the flame. Flames from the range can ignite it and be pulled further into the system, where a fire is much harder to stop. Cleaning it removes that fuel. It’s simpler to plan the work at Bonchurch now than to arrange it in a hurry later.
One small site or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. The price is fixed before any work starts.

Bonchurch kitchens: local notes
Bonchurch is within about 1 mile of the coast. Corrosion on the fan housing and cowl is worth a look at every clean, alongside the grease. Look up Bonchurch on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you’ll find about 21 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 4 sandwich bars and takeaways in and around Bonchurch, up to about a mile and a half out. Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. It’s Isle of Wight council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Bonchurch. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.
Church and community hall kitchens, near Old St. Boniface Church or anywhere around Bonchurch, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Arthur Webster Memorial Hospital for Children about 2.5 miles north, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

When to call us in Bonchurch
Moisture in the air mixes with the grease on the canopy. As the canopy cools, condensation forms and runs with the grease. Drips onto the cooking line are a common result.
Keep an eye out for these warning signs:
- Grease dripping from the canopy edge
- A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
- Wet, greasy drips from the hood
- Poor capture at the hood
Historic houses near Bonchurch, such as Rylstone Manor about 1.8 miles north, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes.

What the work involves, part by part
Plenums and filter housings
A plenum that hasn’t been cleaned for a long time can hold a thick layer of grease. Heavy deposits are scraped out by hand before degreasing.
Grease troughs and gutters
Drips from the canopy edge often start in a full gutter. We clean it out so the grease has somewhere to go.
What we do, step by step
Our technicians bring everything the work needs, from protective sheeting to tools and access equipment. All we need from you is clear access and the right equipment switched off. The visit takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. Somewhere like Bonchurch, lanes, gates and parking are worth mentioning in advance.
- Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
- We protect everything below once it has cooled.
- Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
- We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
- You get pictures of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.
How to prepare
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
- Arrange a key holder or contact on site
- Clear the space around the work
How to get a quote
We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from photos or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To start, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

Looking after it afterwards
Aftercare is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Clean the baffle filters often
- Report new drips or smells from the canopy
- Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
- Keep the fan on through service
The kitchen is handed back clean, with the sheeting gone and the waste removed. Filters are back in place and seated properly, and the kitchen is ready to cook.
Clean filters are the canopy’s first defence. Wash or exchange them regularly, and never cook with one missing. Less grease gets into the plenum as a result.
