St Helens kitchens: local notes
The coast is only about 2 miles from St Helens. Corrosion on the fan housing and cowl is worth a look at every clean, alongside the grease. According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 9 pubs, bars and clubs across St Helens and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. Food hygiene inspections in St Helens are the job of Isle of Wight council’s environmental health team. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.
Church and community hall kitchens, near St Catherine-by-the-Green or anywhere around St Helens, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Arthur Webster Memorial Hospital for Children is the nearest hospital to St Helens, about 5.3 miles south-west.
St Helens is about 3 miles south-east of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. Every kind of commercial site in St Helens, we can take on canopy cleaning. Visits can be booked for evenings, overnight or weekends so the site keeps running. We cover 125 places across the Isle of Wight, from busy centres to quieter spots. For sites nearby, see our Portsmouth page, about 8 miles away.

If your site is somewhere remote, the visit takes a little more planning, so let us know when you get in touch.

How we handle canopy cleaning in St Helens
Canopy cleans are done out of hours: after service, overnight or at the weekend. The equipment underneath is switched off, left to cool and sheeted so the kitchen is ready when we go. If you’re dealing with greasy streaks across the canopy and smoke hanging around the canopy during service, we can help, from wall canopies, island canopies and canopy light fittings onwards.
In a village or hamlet like St Helens, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are typically a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.
We have been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

Managing agents and facilities teams in St Helens
We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we’ll send a fixed quote.
Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept on a regular cycle.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
When it’s something else
We won’t sell you work that does not address the problem, so here are the limits:
- A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out
- A hood that does not cover the cooking line
- Bent or broken filters
If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will say what we think before you book.
Parts of the system we cover
- Plenum chambers
- Canopy light fittings
- Island canopies
- Grease gutters
- Baffle filters
- Wall canopies
Do you need canopy cleaning in St Helens?
Grease does not build up any differently in St Helens: it comes down to how long the kitchen cooks and what’s on the menu. High-heat cooking coats it fastest.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- A canopy that no longer draws the smoke away
- A sticky, discoloured canopy
- A filter housing caked in grease
- Grease filters blocking between washes
Historic houses near St Helens, such as Yaverland Manor about 2.1 miles south-west, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes.
What to look for in a quote
- Whether they’re fully insured
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
- Proof of accreditation you can verify

FAQs for St Helens
Can you clean school kitchen extracts in St Helens during the holidays?
Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 3 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of St Helens. Send us your term dates when you call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line, and we’ll fit the work in.
Does coastal air change anything about canopy cleaning in St Helens?
It can. Salt air reaches St Helens, which is within about 2 miles of the coast, and it speeds up rust. Outdoor metalwork near the sea is worth inspecting at every visit.
Do we need to close while you work?
Not normally. Visits are timed for when the area is closed, such as overnight or at a weekend, so you keep your normal hours.
Is canopy cleaning enough for TR19?
On its own, a canopy clean is a useful extra rather than a full TR19 clean. We’ll make clear on the report which parts were cleaned, so your records stay accurate.
Who is responsible for fire safety on the premises?
That depends on who controls the premises. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
No. The law sets the duty, and TR19® is the recognised benchmark for meeting it. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, the responsible person must reduce fire risk, and without records, many insurers may refuse or reduce a claim.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, depending on what the system needs.
What if parts of the system cannot be reached?
They’re marked on the report. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, which we can install.
What happens on the day
When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the pictures you sent. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, it takes a few hours for most canopies. Somewhere like St Helens, lanes, gates and parking are worth mentioning in advance.
- We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
- The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
- We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
- The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
- We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.
Before we arrive
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Let us know about parking and loading
Ask for a quote
Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.
Related advice
Between visits
Aftercare is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
- Keep the fan on through service
- Report new drips or smells from the canopy
- Check filters aren’t leaving gaps
The kitchen is handed back clean, with the sheeting gone and the waste removed. Every filter is refitted and checked ready for the next service.
Clean filters are the canopy’s first defence. Keep them on a regular cleaning or exchange cycle, and make sure they’re all in place before cooking. The plenum behind them stays cleaner.
