Grease, kitchens and Ventnor

At about 1 mile from the coast, Ventnor is close enough for sea air to matter. Corrosion on the fan housing and cowl is worth a look at every clean, alongside the grease. According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 13 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 9 hotels and B&Bs within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Ventnor. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Ventnor is covered by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

Bursars and site managers at schools such as St Catherine's School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Arthur Webster Memorial Hospital for Children (about 3 miles north-east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

Ventnor is about 8 miles south-east of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. We provide canopy cleaning for businesses, landlords and public buildings in Ventnor and the rest of the Isle of Wight. Across the Isle of Wight, we cover 125 places, and Ventnor is one of them. Our Portsmouth page covers sites nearby (16 miles or so).

Every address in PO38 is within our area for canopy cleaning, from busy streets to back roads. Canopy cleaning is available to premises on Old Station Road, Market Street and High Street and the roads around them. About our canopy cleaning in Ventnor

Every TR19® Grease clean includes the canopy, but some sites need the canopy done between full cleans. Where that is the case, we will be clear that the ducts and fan aren’t included, so your records stay accurate. If you have smoke hanging around the canopy during service and condensation and grease dripping together, we can help.

Around a smaller place like Ventnor, kitchen extracts tend to belong to pubs, cafés, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. Quieter kitchens still collect grease in the duct, just more slowly, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.

Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. That is why every job is written up in a report with photos, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

Between visits

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
  • Run the extract the whole time you’re cooking
  • Check filters aren’t leaving gaps
  • Empty the grease troughs before they fill

Where the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Where only the canopy is done, the report says so clearly.

Clean filters are the canopy’s first defence. Keep them on a regular cleaning or exchange cycle, and make sure they’re all in place before cooking. Less grease gets into the plenum as a result.

What we’re called out for in Ventnor

Because the plenum sits behind the filters, it’s easy to forget. Kitchen staff clean what they can see, so the plenum often carries months of grease.

Most sites get in touch after spotting one of these:

  • Grease filters blocking between washes
  • Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
  • An EHO comment about the canopy
  • A sticky, discoloured canopy

If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Ventnor (Rylstone Manor is about 2.6 miles north-east), fitting access panels needs care.

Our hiring checklist

Multi-site and managed buildings

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we’ll send a fixed quote.

When it’s something else

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
  • Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
  • Filters that no longer seal in the housing

If you’re not sure, just call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer.

  • Canopy light fittings

Common questions in Ventnor

Who inspects food businesses in Ventnor?

Kitchens in Ventnor are inspected by Isle of Wight council’s environmental health officers. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.

Do you cover smaller places like Ventnor?

Yes. Ventnor is within the area we cover across London and the South East. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.

What does TR19 mean?

It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked and expects a risk-based approach.

Which accreditations do you hold?

CHAS, SafeContractor, ISO 9001 and BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We are fully insured and have been trading since 2009.

What happens to the waste?

Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. We do not leave it behind.

How long will it take to clean the canopy?

One lightly soiled hood doesn’t take long, but large or heavily soiled canopies take longer. You’ll know before any work starts.

Do you have insurance?

Yes, we are fully insured. We also hold CHAS and SafeContractor, for sites that check contractor safety.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before any work starts, and waste is contained as we go. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.

What the work involves, part by part

Pub and hotel kitchens

In a pub or hotel, the canopy is often in view of staff all day, so drips and smells soon become a daily nuisance. Cleaning the canopy and plenum sorts it.

School and staff canteen kitchens

Canteens and school kitchens tend to run to a timetable, so the canopy can be cleaned when the kitchen is closed. We often clean them in holidays or at weekends.

What we do, step by step

There’s very little for your team to do on the day. Someone lets us in at the agreed time and shows us where everything is, and the rest is down to us. Afterwards, the area is left tidy and the written report follows. For a place like Ventnor, we load the van from the survey notes so the work can be done in one visit where possible.

  1. Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
  2. Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
  3. Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
  4. We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
  5. The canopy is signed off with before and after pictures and a next clean date.

How to prepare

  • Clear the space around the work
  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site

Getting a quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Advice

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.
