Canopy cleaning for sites in Noke Common

How we handle canopy cleaning in Noke Common

We clean canopies in Noke Common when the kitchen is not cooking: after service, overnight or at the weekend. Cooking equipment is turned off and cooled, then covered, and the kitchen is left ready for the next service. Common call-outs are for a canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection and heavy deposits behind the grease filters, across island canopies, wall canopies and baffle filters.

In a village or hamlet like Noke Common, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are normally a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

Every site gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:

  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • How big the system is
  • A single visit or a regular plan

The cost depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before work begins, so there are no surprises.

Asking for a quote

Photos let us diagnose from a distance. The most useful are:

  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • The postcode and the type of business

Need a price for canopy cleaning? Please phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with a few details about the site. We’ll explain what we’d do and send a fixed quote before you commit to anything.

Noke Common: your questions answered

Who inspects food businesses in Noke Common?

The local authority for Noke Common is Isle of Wight council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Noke Common?

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Noke Common. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Do we lose a day’s trading?

Not normally. Out-of-hours visits keep the disruption down. Bigger sites can be done in stages to keep things running.

What happens if you can’t reach some of it?

We never leave them off the paperwork. You will know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.

Can you clean the canopy outside our opening hours?

We clean when you are not cooking, so most kitchens do not lose a service. Evenings, overnight and weekends are all possible.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.

What is TR19?

It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping and expects a risk-based approach.

How much notice should we give?

That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.

Different parts, different methods

Island canopies

Island canopies often have filters on two sides. We work round the canopy, cleaning each filter bank and plenum.

Pub and hotel kitchens

Staff in pub and hotel kitchens work under the canopy all day, so a dripping hood quickly becomes everyone’s problem. Cleaning the canopy and plenum sorts it.

Kitchen extracts in Noke Common

At about 3 miles from the coast, Noke Common is close enough for sea air to matter. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. Food Standards Agency records include about 8 pubs and bars and about 3 hotels and B&Bs within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Noke Common. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Environmental health officers from Isle of Wight council inspect food businesses in Noke Common. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

Historic houses near Noke Common, such as Carisbrooke Castle about 2.3 miles south, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes. School kitchens, at schools like Hunnyhill Primary School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St. John the Baptist, or anywhere in Noke Common, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

Noke Common is about 2 miles north of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. From the centre of Noke Common to the outskirts, we cover canopy cleaning for every kind of premises, from a single unit to a large public building. We cover 125 places across the Isle of Wight, from busy centres to quieter spots. For sites nearby, see our Portsmouth page, about 12 miles away.

We work across PO30 for canopy cleaning and the streets around it. If your site is just outside Noke Common, we cover Parkhurst (1 mile south-east), Forest Side (1 mile south-west), Hunny Hill (1 mile south), Northwood (2 miles north) and Rew Street (2 miles north-west). Within a short drive, we also cover Ryde (6 miles east), Cowes (3 miles north), Sandown (8 miles south-east), Shanklin (8 miles south-east), Ventnor (10 miles south-east) and East Cowes (3 miles north-east). If your site is somewhere remote, a little more planning is needed, so mention it when you ask for a quote.

How it works

At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and the same goes into the written report. The visit takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Noke Common and turn up when the site is quiet.

  1. Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
  2. We protect everything below once it has cooled.
  3. Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
  4. Plenum, housing, troughs and canopy are all cleaned and checked.
  5. You get pictures of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.

Keeping the system healthy

Simple habits between visits make a real difference. Our advice:

  • Check all filters are fitted before service
  • Give the canopy a wipe after service
  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
  • Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy

After the clean you get a photo report showing the canopy, plenum and housing before and after. The report lists what was cleaned and any part we couldn’t get to, so the record is honest and complete.

Keep the fan running throughout service and for a short while after. Air that keeps moving carries less grease onto the canopy.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.

Honest limits

We’d rather tell you now than book work that won’t help, so these are the things it will not cover:

  • A light fitting that does not work
  • Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)
  • A hood that doesn’t cover the cooking line

If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll say what we think.

For landlords and multi-site operators

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Every visit ends with a dated report and pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare in Noke Common and across the Isle of Wight. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.
