Canopy cleaning across Westridge

About our canopy cleaning in Westridge

Think of the canopy as the mouth of the extract. If it’s coated in grease, everything downstream gets more of it. Our diagnosis starts there, and the treatment is a thorough degrease of the hood, plenum and housing. The work covers grease gutters, island canopies and canopy light fittings, and people most often call us about a greasy hood noticed by an inspector and filters that clog soon after cleaning.

For a kitchen in or near Westridge, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.

The report is your system’s health record: dated, with photos, and showing what was done. Grease extract cleans are also certificated to TR19® Grease through the BESCA VHE portal and sits alongside the report.

What affects the quote in Westridge

The diagnosis comes before the price. The main factors are:

  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • The number of sites or systems

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll explain each part.

Asking for a quote

Before you ask for a quote, gather:

  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • Your last certificate, test record or report

If you need canopy cleaning in Westridge, call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line. Let us know the site type and the opening hours, and send photos or your last report if you can. We typically send a fixed quote within one working day.

When it’s something else

Before you book, it helps to know what’s not included:

  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
  • A dirty extract fan further along the system
  • Filters that no longer seal in the housing

If you are not sure, just call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

Where we work

  • Baffle filters
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Island canopies
  • Grease gutters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Wall canopies

Looking after it afterwards

Results last longer with the right care. We suggest:

  • Leave the extract running until cooking stops
  • Keep every filter in place while cooking
  • Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
  • Keep filters on a set cleaning routine

We clear away the sheeting, waste grease and water before we leave. Every filter is refitted and checked, and the kitchen is ready to cook.

A daily wipe of the hood keeps fresh grease from baking on. It will not replace a professional clean, but it slows the build-up you can see.

What happens if it’s left?

Baked-on grease gets harder to shift the longer it stays. Heat from the range bakes canopy grease into a hard, dark layer, which makes a later clean slower and harder. Systems in rural buildings are often out of sight and out of mind.

The cost depends on how big the system is, the condition it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before work begins, so there are no surprises.

How the visit works

Our technicians bring everything the work needs, including protection sheets, the right tools and access kit. You only need to give us clear access and switch off what needs to be off. The visit takes a few hours for most canopies. A few pictures of the system help us make the most of a visit to a place like Westridge.

  1. We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
  2. The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and photos are taken.

Before we arrive

  • Clear loose items from the work area
  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote does not take long. Send a few details and photos, and we normally reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

Advice

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

When to call us in Westridge

Air straight off the range hits the canopy first. Fat in that air settles on the inside of the hood, in its seams and on the filters before what gets through reaches the plenum.

It’s time to book a visit if you see:

  • Filters that never seem to stay clean
  • Drips from the canopy onto the range
  • Smoke hanging around the canopy during service
  • A filter housing caked in grease

For schools such as Oakfield Church of England Aided Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is normally booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

What your quote should include

  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • What insurance they carry
  • Whether they recommend a next date
  • Whether a survey comes first

Our hiring checklist

Westridge: your questions answered

Is canopy cleaning any different in a coastal place like Westridge?

It can, as Westridge is within about 2 miles of the sea, where salt in the air is hard on metal. Rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings are checked for corrosion as well as grease.

Can a school canteen extract in Westridge be done out of term time?

Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. Food Standards Agency records list about 10 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Westridge. Send us your term dates when you call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email, and we’ll fit the work in.

What if parts of the system can’t be reached?

Anything we cannot reach goes on the report, with photos where possible, and we tell you what would make it reachable, such as extra access panels in ductwork.

How long is a canopy clean?

One lightly soiled hood doesn’t take long, while long canopies, several hoods or heavy deposits take more time. We will tell you what to expect.

What is TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

Is canopy cleaning enough for TR19?

A TR19® Grease clean covers the whole system, not just the canopy. Cleaning the canopy alone leaves the ducts, risers and fan untouched, and the report will say what was covered.

Are the filters cleaned too?

Filters are removed so we can clean the plenum and housing, then cleaned and refitted. Between cleans, a filter exchange service can keep them in good order.

Who is the responsible person?

It depends on the building. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent.

Grease, kitchens and Westridge

Westridge is within about 2 miles of the coast. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. Food Standards Agency records list about 34 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 14 takeaways and sandwich shops across Westridge and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. In Westridge, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Isle of Wight council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

Commuter trade near Smallbrook Junction station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St John's Church or elsewhere in Westridge, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.
