Canopy cleaning in Haylands

The canopy is where the extract system breathes in. A dirty canopy passes more grease further into the system. Our diagnosis starts there, and the treatment is a thorough degrease of the hood, plenum and housing. If you have a plenum thick with grease behind the filters and a canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection, we can put it right, from wall canopies, island canopies and grease gutters onwards.

Size doesn’t change the work: a kitchen in a place like Haylands gets the whole system cleaned, canopy to discharge. We plan the visit around your hours, with the journey sorted in advance.

We have been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

For landlords and multi-site operators

Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.

Whether it’s one building or many, the standard is the same: diagnosis, a fixed price, work booked around your hours and a written report with pictures.

Different parts, different methods

Island canopies

With filters on more than one side, an island canopy has more plenum to clean. Both sides are taken apart and cleaned.

Wall canopies

The back of a wall canopy is hard to reach and easy to miss. We remove the filters to reach it and scrape it clean.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We will take a look and give you a fixed quote.

A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. That’s our job.

Your questions about canopy cleaning in Haylands

Is canopy cleaning any different in a coastal place like Haylands?

It can. Haylands is within about 2 miles of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion. A fan housing that is rusting near the coast can fail sooner, so it’s worth catching early.

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Haylands?

It’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Haylands. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. For many sites, pictures and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

How long will it take to clean the canopy?

Allow an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. We will confirm how long when we quote.

Why is my canopy dripping grease?

A full trough, gaps around the filters or a coated plenum. We clean the canopy, plenum and troughs and tell you what we find.

Do you cover Haylands?

Yes. We work across Greater London, Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, and that includes Haylands.

Can I just have the canopy cleaned instead of the whole system?

Canopy cleaning is part of TR19, not the whole of it. We will make clear on the report which parts were cleaned, so your records stay accurate.

Who is responsible for fire safety on the premises?

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, it’s the responsible person: normally the employer or whoever controls the premises. Landlords, facilities managers and managing agents can also hold responsibility.

What we do, step by step

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before we start, and the area around the work is covered and protected. The work itself takes a few hours for most canopies. Everything the job in Haylands needs is worked out beforehand, from the survey.

  1. Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
  2. We protect everything below once it has cooled.
  3. Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
  4. Plenum, housing, troughs and canopy are all cleaned and checked.
  5. You get photos of the result and a recommended date for the next clean.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Move anything stored near the system

Ask for a quote

To get a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. We usually come back within one working day.

Grease, kitchens and Haylands

Haylands lies within about 2 miles of the sea. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 50 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 21 takeaways and sandwich shops across Haylands and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Each canopy in those kitchens catches grease on the inside of the hood and behind the filters. Kitchens in Haylands get their food hygiene inspections from Isle of Wight council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.

Commuter trade near Ryde St Johns Road station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Gosport War Memorial Hospital is the nearest hospital to Haylands, about 5.3 miles north.

Haylands is about 1 mile south-west of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. Haylands gets the same approach as every site we work on: diagnosis first, a fixed price, out-of-hours working where needed and a written report with photos. Across the Isle of Wight, we cover 125 places, Haylands among them. Our Portsmouth page covers sites nearby (8 miles or so).

Canopy cleaning in PO33 is surveyed, quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. Local streets include Play Lane, Pell Lane and Upton Road, all of which we cover for canopy cleaning. Other places close to Haylands include Upton (1 mile south-west), Ryde (1 mile north-east), Oakfield (1 mile east), Binstead (1 mile north-west) and Elmfield (1 mile east). Further out, we also cover Newport (6 miles west), Cowes (6 miles north-west), Sandown (4 miles south), Shanklin (6 miles south), Ventnor (9 miles south) and East Cowes (5 miles north-west). If your site is somewhere remote, the visit takes a little more planning, so mention it when you ask for a quote.

Around Haylands

In Haylands, that means kitchens and buildings near The Falcon pub, Ryde Academy and Ryde School with Upper Chine and the streets around them. The nearest railway station is Ryde St Johns Road station, roughly 0.9 miles north-east of the centre. A little further out are Sandown Castle (4.4 miles south) and Gosport War Memorial Hospital (5.3 miles north). The countryside around Haylands includes Alan Hersey Nature Reserve and Brading Down.

Looking after it afterwards

Aftercare is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
  • Do not scrape the canopy with metal tools
  • Leave the extract running until cooking stops

File the report alongside your fire risk assessment where an inspector can see it. Before and after pictures speak for themselves.

A daily wipe of the hood keeps fresh grease from baking on. It won’t replace a professional clean, but it slows the build-up you can see.

Do you need canopy cleaning in Haylands?

Most canopies have troughs or channels that catch running grease. If they’re not emptied, they fill and overflow, and grease ends up dripping from the canopy edge.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge
  • Grease channels that no longer drain
  • Grease filters blocking between washes
  • A sticky, discoloured canopy

For schools such as Haylands Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is normally booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.
