Your questions about kitchen extract cleaning in Rew Street

Does the sea air around Rew Street make a difference to kitchen extract cleaning?

It can. Being within about 2 miles of the sea means more corrosion on metalwork in Rew Street than inland. Corroded fixings and housings are noted on the report so they can be dealt with.

Do you clean school canteen extracts around Rew Street out of term?

Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. The FSA’s register shows about 5 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Rew Street. Send us your term dates when you ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form, and we’ll fit the work in.

How long does it take to clean a kitchen extract system?

Allow as long as the system needs, from a few hours to several planned visits. The survey tells us how long your system will need.

Will I get a certificate after the clean?

Yes, a TR19 certificate, along with a photo report. It records what was cleaned, what wasn’t accessible and the recommended next clean date.

How far ahead should we book?

That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and we will quote them together.

Why do insurers care about extract cleaning?

Many insurers ask for proof of regular cleaning to TR19, and many policies require it. An insurer may refuse or reduce a claim if there’s no evidence, so it’s worth checking your policy wording.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes, of course. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we will suggest a schedule and quote for it.

Kitchen extract cleaning in Rew Street

A kitchen extract system is far more than the canopy you can see. Behind it sit the plenum and grease filters, then the ductwork, risers, extract fan and discharge, and each part collects grease. A TR19® Grease clean deals with the whole route, not only the parts on show. The work covers vertical risers, plenums and filters and discharge points, and people most often call us about grease dripping from the canopy or filters and an overdue clean flagged by an EHO or fire officer. Most calls from Rew Street come after an insurer, an EHO or a fire officer asks to see the last TR19 certificate. We handle the clean and the paperwork in one visit.

Grease that collects out of sight, behind the filters and along the duct, is what insurers and fire officers worry about, so that’s where most of the work in Rew Street goes.

In a village or hamlet like Rew Street, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are normally a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease.

The sign-off is always in writing: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

The process

We’re used to working while the site is closed. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so the site can open as normal afterwards. The visit itself takes one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one. Photos of the system and how to reach it help us plan a visit to Rew Street.

  1. You send photos or we visit, and the system is surveyed from canopy to discharge.
  2. Grease thickness is measured and the price is fixed before work starts.
  3. On the night, the equipment is off and cool and the kitchen is sheeted.
  4. We work through the system from the canopy to the fan and discharge.
  5. We re-test, photograph and send your certificate and photo report.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas

Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We’re happy to deal with either side and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across the Isle of Wight. Work can be phased by floor, building or site to keep disruption down.

Keeping the system healthy

Here’s the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Keep the baffle filters clean
  • Report grease drips, smells or fan noise right away
  • Book the next clean before the date on the report
  • Clean grease off the canopy surfaces regularly

The report gives a recommended date for the next clean, based on your cooking hours and the grease we measured. A 3, 6 or 12-monthly maintenance plan keeps it on track, so the date isn’t missed.

Regular filter cleaning is the simplest thing a kitchen can do. Clean, well-fitted filters catch more fat before it reaches the duct, so the ductwork stays cleaner for longer.

What a clean won’t put right

A few issues sit outside what this work can do:

  • Extraction that cannot cope with the cooking because of its design
  • Damaged duct sections that need replacing
  • Fat blocking the kitchen drains

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think before booking.

Kitchen extracts in Rew Street

At about 2 miles from the coast, Rew Street is close enough for sea air to matter. Salt in the air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings, so we check them for corrosion as well as grease. The FSA’s data shows about 6 bars, pubs and nightclubs registered in Rew Street and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Rew Street is covered by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Northwood Primary School or anywhere near Rew Street, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near All Saints' Church or elsewhere in Rew Street, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

Rew Street is about 1 mile south-west of Cowes, in the Isle of Wight. Do you need kitchen extract cleaning in Rew Street?

A lot of duct grease gets there because the filters let it through. Damaged, missing or overloaded filters let grease straight past, and it does not stop until it reaches the fan.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Fat running down the canopy edge
  • An extract that no longer clears the smoke
  • Years of baked-on grease in the ducts
  • Cleaning needed before an insurance renewal or survey

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; St Mary's Hospital is the nearest hospital to Rew Street, about 2.8 miles south-east.

  • How areas they can’t reach will be recorded

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

What affects the cost of kitchen extract cleaning

The diagnosis comes before the price. The main factors are:

  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • A single visit or a regular plan

What you pay depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before work begins, so there are no surprises.

Asking for a quote

Many jobs can be priced from pictures and some basics. Send what you can of the following:

  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • The site address and the type of premises

Every quote begins with a look at the system, either from pictures and details you send or from a site visit. After that, you get a fixed price for the work so you know the cost before any work starts.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.
