Kitchen extract fan repair and replacement: call for a fixed quote

What extract fan repair and replacement involves

A kitchen can’t cook safely for long without extraction. When the extract fan stops, heat, steam and smoke build up fast, and the grease that should be carried away settles in the kitchen and the duct instead. Fans also fail slowly: they get noisier, vibrate, move less air or trip out now and then. We find out why. Often it’s grease on the impeller, which an extract fan clean puts right. Sometimes it’s a worn belt, a failing bearing or motor, or a fan that has simply reached the end of its life. We tell you what we found, quote a fixed price for the repair or a replacement fan, and fit it at a time that suits the kitchen. A replacement fan is a good moment to clean the duct and housing too, so the new fan starts clean. Our article on extract fan problems covers the warning signs, and if the fan has failed completely, our 24/7 emergency line is there for you.

We cover London and the South East, and have done since 2009. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

How it works

  1. You tell us the symptoms, and we look at the fan, its motor and its controls on site.
  2. The fan is isolated and opened up so we can find the cause.
  3. We explain what’s wrong and give you a fixed quote for the repair or a replacement.
  4. Repairs or a new fan are fitted out of hours where possible, so the kitchen keeps cooking.
  5. The fan is run and checked, and we clean the housing and note anything else that needs attention.

Clean, repair or replace?

Many fans that sound like they’re failing are just carrying too much grease. Cleaning comes first where that’s the cause, because it costs less than a repair and often solves the problem. Where parts are worn, a repair may keep the fan running for years. If the fan is old, damaged or no longer suits the system, replacing it is usually the better choice. We’ll give you an honest view.

When the fan has stopped

A dead extract fan can stop a kitchen cooking. Call our 24/7 emergency line and tell us what’s happened. We’ll talk you through what to do in the meantime and arrange for an engineer to come out, so you can get the kitchen back up and running. Once the fan is working again, we’ll look at why it failed and whether cleaning, a repair or a new fan is the right long-term answer.

Why it’s worth doing now

Fans rarely fail without warning. Noise, vibration, weak extraction and tripping are all signs that something is wearing out, and a fan that fails mid-service can stop the kitchen cooking. Weak extraction also leaves more grease in the kitchen and duct. Dealing with the fault while it’s small usually means a simpler repair, fitted when it suits you, rather than an urgent call on a busy night. If your fan has started to sound or feel different, get it looked at before it stops altogether.

What affects the quote

We don’t publish set prices, because no two systems are the same. Send us a few details and photos, or book a survey, and we’ll give you a fixed price before any work starts. The main things that change it are:

  • The size of the system: number of canopies, length of ductwork, risers and fans
  • How much grease or dirt has built up since the last clean
  • Access: roof-level fans, ceiling voids, risers and how many access panels there are
  • When the work can happen: overnight, weekends or school holidays
  • Whether extras are needed, such as new access panels, filter exchange or damper testing
  • How many sites you want covered on one schedule

Read our guide to what affects the cost.

What a good quote includes

  • A survey or clear photos before the price is given
  • Exactly which parts of the system will be cleaned or tested
  • How areas that can't be reached will be recorded
  • A certificate or written report with before-and-after photos
  • Proof of insurance and accreditations you can check
  • The recommended date for the next visit

Afterwards

We run and check the fan before we leave and tell you anything else we noticed. Listen for changes in noise or vibration and tell us early. Keep the filters clean, as they protect the fan, and keep the fan on the same cleaning schedule as the rest of the system. Note the date of the repair or replacement in your maintenance log.

Kitchen extract fan repair and replacement: common questions

Why has my extract fan become so noisy?

Usually grease on the impeller throwing it out of balance, or worn bearings or belts. We find the cause before recommending a clean, repair or replacement.

Can you replace a fan out of hours?

Yes. We fit new fans evenings, overnight or at weekends where possible, so the kitchen keeps cooking.

Should the duct be cleaned when the fan is replaced?

It’s a good time to do it. A new fan fitted to a greasy housing and duct starts off carrying grease from day one.

Do you have an emergency line?

Yes. Our 24/7 emergency line is there for failed extract fans and other urgent problems.

How much does a fan repair cost?

It depends on the fault, the parts and the access. We’ll find the cause and give you a fixed quote before any work starts.

Do you give a fixed price before you start?

Yes. Send a few details and photos, or book a survey, and we’ll give you a fixed quote, usually within one working day.

Do you work out of hours?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends so your kitchen or building doesn’t lose a day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.
