Kitchen extract cleaning in N9: how it works
We treat an extract system much as a doctor treats a patient: diagnose with a survey, treat with a thorough clean, then sign it off. That clean bill of health comes as a TR19 certificate and a photo report, issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Typical jobs include an extract that has never been cleaned to TR19 and a kitchen taken over without any extract records, across canopies and hoods, discharge points and horizontal duct runs.
We start by comparing what we find with the survey or your photos. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, it takes as long as the system needs, from a few hours to several planned visits.
- We start with a survey, so we know every part of the system before we quote.
- Set points are tested for grease thickness and the quote is fixed before any work starts.
- With the kitchen closed and equipment off and cool, the area is sheeted.
- We clean the canopy, plenum, filters, ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
- Readings and photos are taken again, and you receive a TR19 certificate and photo report.
What affects the price in N9
Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all play a part.

- Fixed quotes, normally within one working day
- Out-of-hours work and a 24/7 emergency line

Ask for a quote
There’s no standard price list, because no two systems are the same. Instead, we look at your site first, from pictures or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To get going, ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

Where we work in N9
In N9, we work in places such as Edmonton, Bush Hill Park and Upper Edmonton and well beyond. Every place on our N9 list (6 in all) is covered, and kitchens are cleaned around their opening hours, overnight and at weekends included.
Across London and the South East, we work evenings, overnight and weekends, so sites in N9 can keep trading.
Edmonton: If you cook for passing trade around Edmonton Green station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like North Middlesex University Hospital about 1 mile south-west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.
Signs you need kitchen extract cleaning
In N9, as anywhere, grease gathers where the air slows down: in long flat runs, at bends and changes of direction, and in the fan housing. The cooler the duct, the more grease drops out of the air.
It’s time to book a visit if you see:
- A smoky, hot kitchen with weak extraction
- A kitchen with no current TR19 certificate
- Grease dripping from the canopy or filters
- Missing paperwork after a change of operator
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that is where we come in.
Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
What happens if it’s left?
After a fire, one of the first questions is often when the extract was last cleaned. Many policies require cleaning to TR19, and an insurer can refuse or reduce a claim without proof. A current certificate is far easier to produce than an explanation.
Questions to ask before booking
- What paperwork you get at the end
- Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
- What insurance they carry
- If they look at the system before pricing
Part by part
Canopy and plenum
The canopy catches the vapour, and the plenum behind the filters is where it first condenses. Both are scraped and degreased inside and out, with the filter housing cleaned too.
Grease filters
Filters need cleaning far more often than the duct and we offer a filter exchange service for that. Clean filters slow the build-up further down the system.
When something else is needed
Kitchen extract cleaning can’t fix everything, and we’ll tell you before work begins. It doesn’t solve:
- A duct that is holed or coming apart
- A damper that sticks or has a damaged link
- Extraction that can’t cope with the cooking because of its design
N9: your questions answered
Will the clean disrupt our service?
The clean is done when the kitchen is not cooking, working evenings, overnight or at weekends to suit you. Equipment needs to be off and cool before we start.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7, for problems that cannot wait. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.
What does kitchen extract cleaning cost?
It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. To get one, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos with the site type, opening hours and a few photos.
Why do insurers care about extract cleaning?
Many insurers ask for proof of regular cleaning to TR19, and many policies require it. Without proof, a claim can be refused or reduced, so it’s worth checking your policy wording.
Are you a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 sit alongside that, and we are fully insured.
Is N9 in your area?
Yes. We work across Greater London, Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, N9 included.
Can one contract cover all our sites?
Yes. Send the list of sites and the work at each and we’ll quote them together.
