Canopy cleaning for sites in Walthamstow

Canopy cleaning in Walthamstow, done properly

Canopy cleaning is part of every full TR19® Grease clean, but a canopy can also need cleaning on its own, between full system cleans. In that case, the report makes clear what was and wasn’t cleaned, so your records stay accurate. We are often asked to deal with canopy gutters full of old fat and condensation and grease dripping together, on plenum chambers, grease gutters and island canopies.

In London, few kitchens can spare a day to close, so work in Walthamstow is normally booked for the night or the early hours. Before the clean, we agree loading, parking and roof access with whoever manages the building.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

The process

A visit follows the same order every time: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, do the work, tidy up and hand over the paperwork. On site, the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Getting kit into a London building takes planning, so let us know where we can load and park in Walthamstow.

  1. We look at the canopy first, from photos or on a visit.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Clear the space around the work
  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards

Ask for a quote

We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from pictures or on a visit, then send a fixed quote. To start, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

What affects the quote in Walthamstow

We quote each job individually. This is what makes a difference:

  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule

We don’t list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll explain what it covers.

Asking for a quote

Before you ask for a quote, gather:

  • Wide photos of the system and the area around it
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow

To get a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. You’ll usually have a quote within one working day.

For landlords and multi-site operators

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We work across London and the South East, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

For anyone managing more than one site, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Each site gets its own report and pictures, so records stay tidy.

Walthamstow questions

Is parking a problem for work in Walthamstow?

Parking and loading in London need planning, so tell us about bays, permits and building rules when you book. If the building has a loading slot system, we will book into it.

Which council inspects kitchens in Walthamstow?

Food hygiene inspections in Walthamstow are carried out by Waltham Forest council. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used and we’ll propose a schedule with a fixed quote.

Do you have insurance?

Yes, fully. We also hold CHAS and SafeContractor for clients who vet their contractors.

Which sectors do you work in?

Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a single café to a large school. We work with hotels, schools, care homes, offices, retail and leisure sites.

What do you do with what you remove?

It leaves the site with us at the end of the visit. While we work, it’s kept contained to keep the area clean.

How long does canopy cleaning take?

That depends on the size of the canopy and how much grease is on it. Typically it takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up.

What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?

A photo report, with before and after pictures of the canopy and plenum. It also gives a recommended date for the next clean.

Aftercare tips

How long the results last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Do not scrape the canopy with metal tools
  • Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
  • Empty the grease troughs before they fill
  • Never run the range with a filter out

A before and after photo report follows the clean. It notes what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach, so the record is honest and complete.

A daily wipe of the hood keeps fresh grease from baking on. It does not reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

Signs you need canopy cleaning in Walthamstow

Grease does not build up any differently in Walthamstow: it comes down to how long the kitchen cooks and what’s on the menu. High-heat cooking coats it fastest.

Look out for these warning signs:

  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge
  • Smoke hanging around the canopy during service
  • Filters that clog soon after cleaning
  • Heavy deposits behind the grease filters

If you run a café or takeaway near Walthamstow Central station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits.

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether the quote shows VAT
  • What insurance they carry
  • Whether the quote is based on a survey or pictures
  • Whether the figure could change on the day

Choosing a duct cleaning contractor

Different parts, different methods

Plenums and filter housings

Behind the grease filters is the plenum. It catches whatever gets past the filters, so it’s scraped and degreased on every canopy clean.

Island canopies

Island canopies often have filters on two sides. We work round the canopy, cleaning each filter bank and plenum.

Canopy cleaning around Walthamstow

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 36 pubs and bars in Walthamstow and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. It’s Waltham Forest council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Walthamstow. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. Walthamstow is covered by London Fire Brigade. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

For schools such as Greenleaf Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is usually booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of St Michael and All Angels or elsewhere in Walthamstow, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That is our job.

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We’ll take a look and send you a fixed quote.
