How canopy cleaning works in West Berkshire
Grease troughs, seams and the inside edge of the canopy are the spots a daily wipe misses. Thick deposits are scraped off by hand, then the surfaces degreased to suit what’s there, using hot water or steam where it helps. Typical jobs include a plenum thick with grease behind the filters and drips from the canopy onto the range, on island canopies, canopy light fittings and wall canopies.
We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits.
- We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
- Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
- With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
- The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
- Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

How to get a quote
Here’s what helps us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, a few photos and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Once you have those, call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.
Near you in Newbury
Locally, jobs take us to businesses close to St Nicolas Church, Victoria Park and St Bartholomew's School. You will also find The Diamond Tap (within half a mile north-east), St Nicolas C.E. Junior School (within half a mile south) and St Bartholomew's School (0.6 miles south-west). Newbury has its own railway station: Newbury station. Well-known places in the area include Donnington Castle (1.6 miles north-west) and West Berkshire Community Hospital (1.5 miles east). Green spaces nearby include Audrey's Meadow.
Where we work in West Berkshire
In West Berkshire, a busy kitchen in a place such as Newbury, Thatcham and Burghfield Common and a quiet village kitchen need very different cleaning intervals. Grease readings and BESA’s minimum intervals set the schedule for each.
West Berkshire is within the area we cover, which takes in London and the South East. Each job starts with a survey and a fixed quote.
Newbury: A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St Nicolas Church or elsewhere in Newbury, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like West Berkshire Community Hospital about 1.5 miles east, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.
When something else is needed
Not every problem is solved by canopy cleaning, and we will tell you before we start. It won’t put right:
- Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
- Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
- A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)
Managing agents and facilities teams in West Berkshire
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.
Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Looking after it afterwards
Simple habits between visits make a real difference. We recommend:
- Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
- Check all filters are fitted before service
- Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
- Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily
Where the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. If the job covers only the canopy, the paperwork reflects that.
Empty the grease troughs and cups before they fill. Most canopy drips start with a full trough, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.
Why act early?
A greasy canopy is fuel directly above the flame. Flames from the range can ignite it and be pulled further into the system, where a fire is much harder to stop. A clean canopy takes that fuel away.
Questions to ask before booking
- Proof of insurance
- What paperwork you get at the end
- Whether the figure could change on the day
- What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed
Your questions about canopy cleaning in West Berkshire
Do we need to close the kitchen for a canopy clean?
Out-of-hours cleans are how we work, at night, early in the morning or at weekends. We leave it clean and ready for the next service.
Do you have insurance?
Yes. We are fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.
Do you work in West Berkshire?
Yes. We work in West Berkshire, within our South East and London area. For a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.
What kinds of canopies do you clean?
Most commercial kitchen canopies, from one small hood to a long run of canopies. We work out the approach when we survey, from pictures or a visit.
What’s TR19?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.
What if parts of the system cannot be reached?
We never leave them off the paperwork. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.
Why does grease run off the canopy edge?
Most drips come from overflowing troughs, damaged filters or a plenum thick with grease. We clean the canopy, plenum and troughs and tell you what we find.
