Canopy cleaning in Sheffield Bottom, done properly

The canopy is where the extract system breathes in. If it’s coated in grease, everything downstream gets more of it. We start the check-up there, and the cure is a thorough clean of the hood, the plenum and the filter housing. If you have a greasy hood noticed by an inspector and drips from the canopy onto the range, we can help, from baffle filters, wall canopies and island canopies onwards.

Work in a small place like Sheffield Bottom starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. So every job comes with a written report and pictures, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

Sheffield Bottom questions

Can a school canteen extract in Sheffield Bottom be done out of term time?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Around Sheffield Bottom, the Food Standards Agency lists about 5 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Tell us your holiday dates and we’ll book the visit for when the site is empty.

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Sheffield Bottom?

It’s Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Sheffield Bottom. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. You deal with one contact for every site in our area, with visits on a regular schedule.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, plus pictures of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.

Is canopy cleaning enough for TR19?

TR19® Grease is about the whole extract, from canopy to discharge. A canopy clean helps between full cleans, but the ducts and fan still need doing, and the report will say what was covered.

Do you provide photos of the cleaned canopy?

A photo report shows the canopy and plenum before and after. Full system cleans also come with a TR19 certificate.

How much does canopy cleaning cost?

We do not publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: the size of the system, its condition, access and when we can work. You get a fixed price before work begins.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, depending on what the system needs.

How it works

Protection comes first: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. It takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Sheffield Bottom and turn up when the site is quiet.

  1. We start by checking the canopy and what’s behind its filters.
  2. Equipment is turned off and cooled, and the area under the canopy is protected.
  3. Heavy deposits come off by hand, then the surfaces are degreased.
  4. We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
  5. The canopy is signed off with before and after photos and a next clean date.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms

Keeping the system healthy

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Wipe the canopy down at close every day
  • Run the extract the whole time you’re cooking
  • Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
  • Make sure filters sit tight in the housing

The report gives a recommended next clean date. That date is based on your cooking hours and what we found, in line with BESA guidance.

A daily wipe of the hood keeps fresh grease from baking on. It doesn’t reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

Multi-site and managed buildings

If you look after several sites, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Each site gets its own report and photos, so records stay tidy.

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we can quote for the whole system.

The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.

When to call us in Sheffield Bottom

Because the plenum sits behind the filters, it’s easy to forget. Kitchen staff clean what they can see, so the plenum often carries months of grease.

The symptoms we’re asked about most are:

  • Fat running down the front of the hood
  • Greasy streaks across the canopy
  • Wet, greasy drips from the hood
  • An EHO comment about the canopy

Commuter trade near Theale station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands.

What affects the quote in Sheffield Bottom

  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • The condition we find in the survey
  • How easy every part is to reach

Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.

  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
